Fisheries (Exemption From Compliance With Section 192A(1) of the Fisheries Act 1996) Notice 2025 (Notice No. MPI 1912)
Pursuant to the Legislation Act 2019 and section 192A(2) of the Fisheries Act 1996, the Chief Executive, after complying with section 192A of the Fisheries Act 1996, gives the following notice.
This notice is the Fisheries (Exemption From Compliance With Section 192A(1) of the Fisheries Act 1996) Notice 2025.
This notice comes into force on the day after its notification in the New Zealand Gazette.
In this notice:
“kina” means a shellfish of the species Evechinus chloroticus (also known as the sea egg)
“long-spined sea urchin” means a shellfish of the species Centrostephanus rodgersii
“sea urchin” refers to both kina and long-spined sea urchin defined above
“special permit” means a special permit issued under section 97(1)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1996 for the purpose of allowing persons or organisations to take and dispose, cull, or translocate sea urchins for the purpose of habitat restoration and/or prevention of urchin barrens.
A fish farmer who acquires or is in possession of sea urchin is exempt from section 192A(1) of the Fisheries Act 1996.
The exemption given in clause 4 of this notice is subject to the following condition:
