Notice of New Official Geographic Names under the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Act 2025

Pursuant to sections 30–31 and Schedules 2–4 of the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Act 2025 (“Marine Protection Act 2025”) the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) gives notice of two new official Crown protected area names and 17 new official geographic names as described in the Schedules below. Refer to the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana marine protection maps at: https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/auckland/hauraki-gulf-marine-park/marine-protection-maps/.

The new official Crown protected area names and geographic names took effect on 25 October 2025, being the commencement date of the Marine Protection Act 2025.

Pursuant to section 32 of the Marine Protection Act 2025, in the future the Board may agree to alter any official geographic name listed in Schedules 1–3 below, but must consult with the Director-General of Conservation. If a Māori name, the Board must also consult with iwi that exercise kaitiakitanga in the relevant area and ensure that the proposed name uses standardised orthography.

Schedule 1 – Marine Reserves
