Notice of New and Altered Geographic and Crown Protected Area Names and a Discontinued Crown Protected Area Name for Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Ranginui Claims Settlement Act 2025

Pursuant to sections 26, 27, 29, 30, 31, 43 and 54 of the Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Ranginui Claims Settlement Act 2025 (“Settlement Act 2025”), the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) gives notice of eight new and altered geographic names, two altered Crown protected area (“CPA”) names and one discontinued CPA name as described in the Schedules below.

The official geographic names, official CPA names and discontinued CPA name took effect on 13 June 2025, being the specified date in the Settlement Act 2025.

Pursuant to sections 28 and 31(3) of the Settlement Act 2025, in the future the Board may agree to alter any official geographic name listed in Schedules 1 and 2, only with the written consent of the trustees of Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Ranginui Settlement Trust.

Hūhārua

A peninsula that extends the length of Plummers Point Road from State Highway 2 into Tauranga Harbour. NZTopo50-BD36 668253 to BD36 688284.

Plummers Point (local use name)

Mangahuruhuru Stream

A stream that flows for approximately 2km from the confluence of Te Āhuru Stream and Kaukaumoutiti Stream to its confluence with Mangakarengorengo River. NZTopo50-BD36 639102 to BD36 656101.

Te Ahuru Stream (lower part) (recorded name)

Ngāumuwahine River

A stream that flows generally southeast for approximately 16km from near Waianuanu (hill) to its confluence with Mangakarengorengo River. NZTopo50-BD36 560137 to BD36 656101.

Ngamuwahine River and Ngamuwahine Stream (recorded names)

Parewhataroa Peninsula

A peninsula that extends for approximately 1.8km from Newnham Road into Tauranga Harbour. NZTopo50-BD36 700261 to BD36 689276.

Te Puna West (local use name)

Ruangārara Stream

A stream that flows for approximately 10km from the slopes of Kaimai Range to its confluence with Wairoa River. NZTopo50-BD36 638163 to BD36 717189.

Ohourere Stream (official name)

Te Āhuru Stream

A stream that flows generally east for approximately 7km from the slopes of Kaimai Range to its confluence with Mangahuruhuru Stream. NZTopo50-BD36 578096 to BD36 639102.

Te Ahuru Stream (upper part) (recorded name)

Te Hopuni

A historic kāinga located near the end of Jess Road where the land juts out into Te Puna Estuary. NZTopo50-BD36 686262.

A mahinga kai site located on a sand bank that is exposed at low tide in Waikareao Estuary. NZTopo50-BD37 788254.
