Notification of Application of Overlay Classification and Protection Principles—Murumuru Conservation Area

Pursuant to section 48(1) of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua Claims Settlement Act 2025, the Minister of Conservation hereby notifies that the area described in the Schedule hereto has been declared to be subject to an overlay classification by section 43 of the Act. The provisions of the Act which relate to the overlay areas are sections 42 to 56.

Pursuant to section 48(1)(b) of the Act, the Minister hereby notifies that the following Protection Principles are directed at the Minister of Conservation avoiding harm to, or the diminishing of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua values related to the Murumuru Conservation Area:

(a) protection of wāhi tapu, indigenous flora and fauna, traditional materials and resources, water and the wider environment of the Murumuru Conservation Area;

(b) recognition and respect for the distinct Te Korowai o Wainuiārua mana, kaitiakitanga and tikanga over and within the Murumuru Conservation Area and in particular their relationship with wāhi tapu, wāhi tīpuna and wāhi taonga of the Murumuru Conservation Area, and their relevance to the protection of the Murumuru Conservation Area;

(c) encouragement of recognition and respect for the particular association of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua with the Murumuru Conservation Area and encouraging others to respect that relationship;

(d) accurate portrayal of the separate and distinct associations and kaitiakitanga relationship of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua with the Murumuru Conservation Area;

(e) recognition of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua mahinga kai and the provision of cultural resources in the Murumuru Conservation Area;

(f) respect for and recognition of the distinct relationship of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua with the wahi tapu and wahi whakahirahira and the Murumuru Conservation Area; and

(g) recognition of the interest of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua in protecting species within the Murumuru Conservation Area including, but not limited to:

  1. North Island brown kiwi;
  2. North Island kākā;
  3. kārearea;
  4. kererū;
  5. whio;
  6. kākāriki (yellow crowned parakeet);
  7. toutouwai (North Island robin);
  8. titipounamu (rifleman);
  9. mātātā (fernbird);
  10. pōpokotea (whitehead);
  11. forest gecko;
  12. pekapeka-tou-roa (long-tailed bat);
  13. pekapeka-tou-poto (short-tailed bat); and
  14. native fish including tuna, piharau, kōaro and banded kōkopu present.
