Amendment of Description of Different Character and Constitution of the Board for Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awa Kairangi (1670)

Under section 205(5) of the Education and Training Act 2020, I hereby amend the statement of the character of  Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awa Kairangi (1670) as follows

Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awa Kairangi will offer Kaupapa Māori – Māori Medium education independent of Te Aho Matua or Ngā Kura a Iwi.

The designated character of the school is:

  • to provide education in te reo Māori to inspire life long principles of Te Purutanga Māuri
  • to honour the legacy of Te Kōhanga Reo – Pono ki te kaupapa punako te reo – “Be true to the kaupapa and te reo will forever flourish”
  • to embed the thinking; “from the womb to the tomb” for tamariki and their whanau to enjoy a positive learning experience and enriched wellbeing while infusing key elements that promote success – identity, language and culture
  • to sustain the integrity of the relationships between the three foundational partners Waiwhetu marae (Mana whenua) Ngā kohanga reo o te Awakairangi, and Kōkiri Marae (Ngā Hau e whā).

Ngā kaitiaki o te kaupapa

Under section 205(4) of the Act, I name Te Purutanga Māuri as responsible for protecting and maintaining the character of Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awa Kairangi.

Te Pōari Matua | The Board

Te Pōari Matua (“Board”) of Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awa Kairangi shall be made up of the following members:

  1. Two representatives appointed by Ngā Purutanga Mauri to uphold the Kaupapa Motuhake of the Kura.
  2. One representative appointed by Ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awa Kairangi.
  3. Up to two 2 representatives co-opted by the Pōari Matua | Board.

This notice will take effect on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
