Notice of Intention to Make Draft Herd Management Plan

Under Section 19(5)(a)(i) of the Game Animal Council Act 2013

In accordance with section 19(5)(a)(i) of the Game Animal Council Act 2013, and pursuant to an assignment of legislative responsibility, I, the Honourable James Rawiri Meager, Minister for Hunting and Fishing, give notice of my intention to make a herd management plan for Fiordland wapiti (all species of animals of the genus Cervus (deer)) existing in the Fiordland Wapiti Area (being the area of Fiordland National Park generally between the Worsley and South West Arms of Lake Te Anau, Te Hāpua / Sutherland Sound, and Taiporopopro / Charles Sound).

Before making the herd management plan, I am required by section 19(5)(c) of the Game Animal Council Act 2013 to give interested persons a reasonable time to make submissions on a draft.

Submissions are now invited. Any person or organisation may make a submission in writing.

The Draft Herd Management Plan, including a map of the area subject to the Plan, and supporting information can be found at: www.doc.govt.nz/wapiti-hosi-consultation.

Hard copies can be viewed at the Department of Conservation’s Te Rua-o-te-moko / Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre during business hours or by appointment at Department of Conservation offices anywhere in the country.

Online submissions are encouraged through the consultation web page linked above. Submissions can also be made:

  • by e-mail to wapitihosihmp@doc.govt.nz; or
  • by post to Wapiti HOSI draft HMP Submissions, Department of Conservation, PO Box 4715, Christchurch 8140.

The submission period will commence on 10 November 2025.

Submissions must be made by 11.59pm on Monday, 8 December 2025.
