Marine Mammal (Dusky Dolphins) Kaikōura Declaration Notice
Pursuant to Regulation 15(3) of the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations 1992, and pursuant to an Instrument of Delegation dated 9 September 2015 from the Director-General of Conservation, I, Henry Weston, Deputy Director-General, Operations, Department of Conservation, hereby give notice that from the date of this notice until 2 August 2031, no new permits shall be granted to view dusky dolphins, or swim with dusky dolphins, in all those waters along the Kaikōura Coast, between the Clarence River Mouth (173°56′E, 42°10′S) and the Waiau River Mouth (173°22′E, 42°47′S) and extending out due east to 25 nautical miles from the shore.
This declaration does not apply to any application to renew an existing commercial permit for the location specified above or to transfer any permit in its entirety or in part, or to amend any permit, provided there is no material increase in the amount of contact with marine mammals.
This declaration does not apply to applications for kayaks that are launched from shore at Kaikōura Peninsula, or to applications for viewing by aircraft.
