A state of local emergency was declared at 3.24pm on Wednesday 22 October 2025 over the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group area owing to the severe weather event, including wildfires and severe wind.

Pursuant to section 72 of the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002, I, Mark Patrick Mitchell, terminate the state of local emergency in force over the Waimakariri District, Christchurch City, Selwyn District, Ashburton District, Timaru District, Mackenzie District, Hurunui District and Waimate District, being districts within the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group area.

The termination of the state of local emergency over these districts takes effect from 5.40pm on Friday, 24 October 2025.

For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not terminate the state of local emergency over the Kaikōura District.
