Under regulation 9(2) of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries gives the following notice.

1. Title

This is the Fisheries (Notification for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Māui) Notice 2025.

2. Commencement

This notice came into force on 17 December 2024.

3. Interpretation

In this notice:

Customary food gathering area/rohe moana means all that area of South Island fisheries waters enclosed by a line:

1. starting at a point on the mean high-water mark at Kahurangi Point at 40°46.526′S and 172°13.014′E; then
2. proceeding in a straight line in a north-westerly direction to a point on the outer limit of the exclusive economic zone at 38°09.316′S and 169°32.599′E; then
3. proceeding in a straight line in a south-easterly direction along the South Island fisheries waters boundary to an offshore point at 40°02.000′S and 173°00.000′E; then
4. proceeding in a straight line in a south-easterly direction along the South Island fisheries waters boundary to an offshore point at 40°42.000′S and 174°40.000′E; then
5. proceeding in a straight line in a southerly direction along the South Island fisheries waters boundary to an offshore point at 41°13.000′S and 174°31.000′E; then
6. proceeding in a straight line in a south-westerly direction along the South Island fisheries waters boundary to an offshore point at 41°26.000′S and 174°23.000′E; then
7. proceeding in a straight line in a south-westerly direction to a point on the mean high-water mark northwest of White Bluffs/Te Parinui o Whiti at 41°33.060′S and 174°08.169′E; then
8. proceeding inland along the northern boundary of the Takiwa of Ngai Tahu Whanui defined under Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Act 1996 to the starting point.

Tāngata whenua of the customary food gathering area/rohe moana are represented by 1 of the following bodies or trusts, or the bodies or trusts that replace them:
