Under section 186A of the Fisheries Act 1996, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, after complying with the requirements of that section, gives the following notice.

Notice

1. Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Western Taranaki Temporary Closure) Notice 2024.

2. Commencement

This notice comes into force on 16 December 2024.

3. Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked on the close of 15 December 2026.

4. Interpretation

In this notice:

Sea anemone means any animal of the order Actinaria.

Stingray means any cartilaginous fish of the families Dasyatidae and Myliobatidae.

Western Taranaki means all that area of New Zealand fisheries waters enclosed by a line—

  1. commencing at a point on the mean high-water mark at 39°05.913′S and 173°58.681′E (near the mouth of the Tapuae Stream); then
  2. proceeding in a generally southerly direction along the mean high-water mark to a point at 39°29.312′S and 173°52.977′E (near the mouth of the Taungatara Stream); then
  3. proceeding in a straight line in a south-westerly direction to a point one nautical mile offshore at 39°30.040′S and 173°51.972′E; then
  4. proceeding in a generally northerly direction by a line, each point of which is one nautical mile from the mean-high-water mark, to a point offshore at 39°05.159′S and 173°57.779′E; then
  5. By a straight line proceeding to the starting point.

5. Western Taranaki closed in respect of all shellfish (except rock lobster), all seaweed (except beach cast seaweed), all sea anemones, all stingrays, and conger eel species Conger wilsoni and Conger verreauxi

A person must not take any shellfish (except rock lobster), any seaweed (except beach cast seaweed), any sea anemones, any stingrays, or any conger eels of the species Conger wilsoni or Conger verreauxi from Western Taranaki.
