Notice of New and Altered Geographic Names and Discontinued Crown Protected Area Names for Whakatōhea Claims Settlement Act 2024

Pursuant to sections 44, 45, 59, 60, 61, 77, 79, 80, 82, 85, 94 and 123 of the Whakatōhea Claims Settlement Act 2024 (“Settlement Act 2024”), the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) gives notice of three new and altered geographic names, one altered Crown protected area (“CPA”) name and eight discontinued CPA names as described in the Schedules below.

The official geographic names, official CPA name and discontinued CPA names took effect on 1 August 2024 being the settlement date specified in the Settlement Act 2024. Pursuant to section 46 of the Settlement Act 2024, in the future the Board may agree to alter any official geographic name listed in Schedules 1 and 2 with the written consent of the trustees of Te Tāwharau o Te Whakatōhea.

A small locality approximately 5km south of Ōpōtiki. NZTopo50-BE41 764795.

Waioeka (official name)

Waioweka River

A river flowing generally northwards from the confluence of Kahunui Stream and Koranga River in Kahikatea Range, for approximately 50km into Bay of Plenty at Ōpōtiki. NZTopo50-BF41 745415 to BE41 758853.

Waioweka Gorge Scenic Reserve

The remaining part of the Crown protected area, which is a large scenic reserve in Bay of Plenty Region that extends roughly adjacent to State Highway 2 from Waikerea Forest in the north to near Mātāwai in the south. Gazetted at NZTopo50-BE41 780724.
