Māori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement (Extension to the Bay of Plenty Region Negotiation Period) Notice 2024 (Notice No. MPI 1887)

Pursuant to section 11(3) of the Maori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement Act 2004 (“Act”), the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, after complying with the requirements in section 11(4) of the Act, gives the following notice.

1. Title

This notice is the Māori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement (Extension to the Bay of Plenty Region Negotiation Period) Notice 2024.

2. Commencement

This notice comes into force on 30 December 2024.

3. Interpretation

In this notice:

  1. Bay of Plenty region negotiation period means the period within two years of receipt of the first aquaculture resource consent application in the Bay of Plenty region. The Crown must use its best endeavours to negotiate and enter into regional agreements that provide for the Crown to meet its obligations in respect of new space for that region within this two year period. The Bay of Plenty region negotiation period has been extended four times previously under section 11(3) of the Act and is due to expire on 31 December 2024 (see New Zealand Gazette, 25 May 2023, Notice No. 2023-go2137).
  2. Region has the same meaning as in section 4 of the Act.

4. Extension to Negotiation Period

The Bay of Plenty region negotiation period is extended to 30 September 2025.
