In accordance with section 161(2) of the Land Transport Act 1998, the Ministry of Transport, on behalf of the Minister of Transport, gives notice of the Minister’s intention to make the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 (“draft Rule”), which is now available for public comment.

The draft Rule proposes to revoke the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2022 and replace it with a new regime for road controlling authorities to set speed limits for roads to (among other things) ensure economic impacts and community views are considered alongside safety impacts when considering speed limit changes.

The draft Rule can be viewed at https://www.transport.govt.nz/.

Any interested person may make a submission on the draft Rule before 5.00pm on Thursday, 11 July 2024. Information on how to make submissions can be found on the above website.
