Notice is given of the making of the following instruments by the Minister for Social Development and Employment.

The instruments come into force on 4 September 2023.

The Temporary Accommodation Assistance (North Island Weather Events) Programme is made under section 101 of the Social Security Act 2018 and enables financial assistance for temporary accommodation costs to be granted to certain people whose homes were damaged by a North Island weather event, are living in temporary accommodation because they have been required to vacate their homes, and their insurance cover for temporary accommodation has expired.

The Direction in relation to Special Benefit (Temporary Accommodation Assistance) Amendment 2023 is made under section 7 of the Social Security Act 2018 and amends the Ministerial Direction in relation to Special Benefit as established and made on 12 February 1999 to:

• ensure payments made under the Temporary Accommodation Assistance (North Island Weather Events) Programme are not chargeable income for Special Benefit purposes; and
• remove a spent provision relating to the Temporary Accommodation Assistance (Canterbury Earthquake) Programme.

The instruments are secondary legislation for the purposes of the Legislation Act 2019 and are administered by the Ministry of Social Development.
