Notice of Decisions to Alter Undersea Feature Names as Official

Pursuant to sections 25 and 21(2) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) gives notice of three altered official undersea feature names beyond New Zealand’s 12 nautical mile territorial limit, as described in the Schedule below.

The Board’s final determinations on these undersea feature names took effect on 7 June 2023.

Official Altered Undersea Feature Name

Description

Kahurangi Valley

An undersea valley offshore from Kahurangi Point on the northwest coast of Te Waipounamu, extending from -40.5309 latitude, 171.3760 longitude, to -40.6098 latitude, 171.6097 longitude. Alteration from Heaphy Sea Valley (existing undersea feature name).

Southwest Challenger Bank

An undersea bank at -39.8000 latitude, 167.2100 longitude, near the southwest edge of Challenger Plateau. Alteration from Westpac Bank (existing undersea feature name).

Southwest Challenger Hills

A cluster of undersea volcanic hills at -39.7742 latitude, 167.2574 longitude, on top of Southwest Challenger Bank near the southwest edge of Challenger Plateau. Alteration from Westpac Bank Hills (existing undersea feature name).
