Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki) for Area/Rohe Moana of Ngāti Takapari, Te Waiariki, and Ngāti Korora) Notice 2023 (Notice No. MPI 1646)

Pursuant to Regulation 9 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries gives the following notice.

Notice

1. Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Ngāti Takapari, Te Waiariki, and Ngāti Korora) Notice 2023.

2. Commencement

This notice comes into force on 19 May 2023.

3. Customary food gathering area/rohe moana

(1) This notice applies to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana in the New Zealand fisheries waters (except South Island fisheries waters) within the following lines (but subject to subclause (2)):

  1. Starting near Horahora at 35°40.337′S 174°30.467′E; then
  2. Proceeding in an easterly direction in a straight line to a point 35°40.337′S 178°6.571′W; then
  3. Proceeding in a generally southerly direction following the boundary of the EEZ to a point at 35°41.141′S 178°05.804′W; then
  4. Proceeding in a westerly direction in a straight line to Paparoa at 35°41.141′S 174°30.632′E; then
  5. Following the mean high water mark in a generally northerly direction back to the starting point.

(2) The customary food gathering area/rohe moana does not include any areas that overlap with the customary food gathering area/rohe moana defined by clause 3 of the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Whanau a Kauaetangohia Hapū) Notice 2016.

4. Tangata whenua

The tangata whenua of the area/rohe moana are Ngāti Korora, Te Waiariki, and Ngāti Tu.

5. Appointments

(1) The Minister for Oceans and Fisheries has appointed the following people as tāngata kaitiaki/tiaki for the rohe moana:

  1. Phillip Wellington;
  2. Āperahama Kerepeti-Edwards;
  3. Murphy Mahanga;
  4. Malcolm Pitt; and
  5. Waimārie Bruce-Kingi.

(2) The appointments took effect on 30 April 2023.
