Pursuant to section 47(1)(a) of the Ngāti Rangitihi Claims Settlement Act 2022, the Minister of Conservation hereby notifies that the area described in the Schedule hereto has been declared to be subject to a whenua rāhui by section 42 of the Act.

The provisions which relate to the whenua rāhui are sections 42–55.

Pursuant to section 47(1)(b) of the Act, the Minister hereby notifies that the following protection principles are directed at the Minister of Conservation avoiding harm to, or the diminishing of the Ngāti Rangitihi values related to Lake Tarawera Historic Reserve and part Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve area:

1. protection of wāhi tapu, indigenous flora and fauna and the wider environment within Lake Tarawera Historic Reserve and part Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve;
2. recognition of the mana, kaitiakitanga and tikanga of Ngāti Rangitihi within Lake Tarawera Historic Reserve and part Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve;
3. respect for Ngāti Rangitihi tikanga within Lake Tarawera Historic Reserve and part Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve;
4. encouragement of the respect for the association of Ngāti Rangitihi with Lake Tarawera Historic Reserve and part Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve;
5. accurate portrayal of the association of Ngāti Rangitihi with Lake Tarawera Historic Reserve and part Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve; and
6. recognition of the relationship of Ngāti Rangitihi with the wāhi tapu and wāhi whakahirahira.
