Notice of Decisions to Adopt, Assign and Alter Undersea Feature Names as Official

Pursuant to sections 10(1)(d), 25 and 26 of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) gives notice of six adopted, two assigned and four altered official undersea feature names beyond New Zealand’s 12 nautical mile territorial limit, as described in the Schedule below.

The Board’s final determinations on these undersea feature names took effect on 16 May 2022.

Description

Adare Sea Channel

An undersea channel in the Southern Ocean, extending from -70.9120 latitude, 175.4330 longitude, to -71.7171 latitude, 173.8242 longitude. Assigned as official.

Coquille Seamount

A seamount adjacent to the southeast end of Cook Fracture Zone, at -26.9608 latitude, 173.5796 longitude. Adopted as official.

Giljanes Seamount

An undersea volcanic seamount on the Kermadec arc, at -34.7748 latitude, 178.5787 longitude. Alteration from Giljanes Volcano (recorded undersea feature name).

KOPRI Seamount

A seamount approximately 370km east of the Balleny Islands, at -67.8312 latitude, 173.6632 longitude. Adopted as official.

Lower Paritū Basin

An undersea basin offshore from the central east coast of Te Ika-a-Māui, at -39.1049 latitude, 178.7009 longitude. Adopted as official.

Matahourua Ridge

An undersea ridge on the northeast side of Kupe Abyssal Plain, at -29.6833 latitude, 178.2333 longitude. Alteration from Matahourua Seamount (recorded undersea feature name).

Parea Guyot

An undersea guyot at -41.0355 latitude, -169.1472 longitude, north of the eastern end of Chatham Rise. Alteration from Chicken Seamount (recorded undersea feature name).

Paritū Basin

An undersea basin offshore from the central east coast of Te Ika-a-Māui, at -39.0000 latitude, 178.4500 longitude. Adopted as official.

Paritū Gap

An undersea gap at -39.0293 latitude, 178.6792 longitude, separating North Paritū Ridge from South Paritū Ridge. Adopted as official.

Petrel Spur

A low undersea ridge adjacent to the southeast end of Wanganella Trough, at -34.3139 latitude, 168.8212 longitude. Adopted as official.

Veryan Valley

An undersea valley at the southwestern end of South Chatham Slope, extending from -45.1917 latitude, 176.5209 longitude, to -45.1490 latitude, 177.5968 longitude. Alteration from Veryan Channels (recorded undersea feature name).

Waite Hills

Two undersea hills joined by a saddle, in the Southern Ocean at -72.4225 latitude, -162.7214 longitude. Assigned as official.
