1. Pursuant to sections 190, 204 and 205 of the Education and Training Act 2020 (“Act”), I hereby establish in Levin a Year 1–15 co-educational, composite school to be known as Te Pā Wānanga o Tuteremoana, and designate the school as a designated character school under section 204 of the Act.

2. Te Pā Wānanga o Tuteremoana will deliver its curriculum in Māori Medium Level 1, and operate with the following aims, purposes and objectives which will together constitute its designated character:

  1. Te Pā Wānanga o Tuteremoana will provide a tikanga based learning environment in which tamariki will:
    • be engaged and successful in their learning;
    • be culturally strong in te reo me ōna tikanga;
    • be on a learning pathway capable of successful transition to higher levels of educational opportunities;
    • be equipped with the confidence, self-esteem, knowledge and actively contribute to the revitalisation and maintenance of Muaūpoko language, tikanga and knowledge; and
    • be productive members of their whānau, their hapū, their iwi, and their community as productive global citizens.
  2. Muaūpokotanga is the description of the culture of Muaūpoko, an iwi view that embraces language, history, traditions, tikanga, values, beliefs, stories, knowledge and the natural environment,
  3. The wharekura will have practices and curriculum delivery embedded with Muaūpokotanga which reflects the iwi view and the uniqueness of its location within tribal boundaries,
  4. The wharekura will determine a pathway for tamariki as Māori, affirm their uniqueness and nurture them in an environment that is iwi responsive, and whose mauri is Māori.

3. The constitution of the board will be a standard constitution under section 119 of the Act.

This notice shall come into force the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
