Pursuant to section 476(1) of the Education and Training Act 2020, I give notice that a vacancy has arisen in the membership of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (“Teaching Council”).

Seven members were elected by the teaching profession and I appointed five members, who all took office on 1 July 2019. I will appoint one further member for a term lasting until 30 June 2022, the end date for the terms of the existing members.

When considering whether to appoint an individual as a member of the Teaching Council I will:

  1. take into account each candidate’s ability to carry out the duties of a member of the Teaching Council and represent the public interest; and
  2. have regard to the collective skills, experience, and knowledge making up the overall composition of the Teaching Council, including (but not limited to) the candidate’s knowledge and experience in any of the following areas:
    1. education
    2. governance
    3. leadership experience and skills
    4. financial skills
    5. understanding of the partnership principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Appointments will be considered by the Cabinet Appointments and Honours Committee as soon as possible.

If you wish to nominate an individual to be considered for appointment to the Teaching Council, you can do this by emailing Appointments.Mailbox@education.govt.nz. Nominations close: 23 May 2021.

Dated at Wellington this 12th day of May 2021.
