Nelson City Council City Centre Emergency Speed Limit

Pursuant to the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2017, the Nelson City Council hereby advises that an emergency speed limit has been set for parts of the Nelson city centre.

Notice

1. Title

This notice is the Nelson City Council City Centre Emergency Speed Limit.

2. Commencement

The emergency speed limit comes into force on and from 9 May 2020.

3. Expiry

The emergency speed limit expires on 9 May 2021 unless revoked prior.

4. Speed Limit

The emergency speed limit is 30 kilometres per hour.

5. Application

The emergency speed limit applies to the following roads or parts of roads, which are in the Nelson city centre:

  • Hardy Street, between Rutherford Street and Collingwood Street
  • Bridge Street, between Rutherford Street and Collingwood Street
  • Trafalgar Street, between Hardy Street and Halifax Street
  • Church Street
  • Park Street
  • Hope Street
  • Morrison Street
  • Halstead Street
  • Montgomery Square, and its entrance and exit lanes from Bridge Street, Rutherford Street and Hardy Street
  • Buxton Square, and its entrance and exit lanes, including Alma Street from Buxton Square to Bridge Street
  • Wakatau Square, and its entrance and exit lanes, including Archilles Avenue, Wakatu Lane, and Haven Road from Rutherford Street to Bridge Street.

6. Reasons

The emergency speed limit is necessary in order to:

  1. manage speed on roads within the Nelson city centre where there has been a reallocation of road space (eg making roadway into footpaths) to allow for COVID-19 social distancing, so as to help reduce the risk of death or injury to pedestrians and road users; and
  2. allow time for the development of, and consultation on, permanent speed limits in the Nelson city centre.

This notice fulfils the requirements of section 7.2(5) of the Land Transport Rule Setting of Speed Limits 2017.
