Wellington City Council—South Coast Roads Emergency Speed Limit
Pursuant to section 7 (Emergency speed limits) of the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2017, Wellington City Council hereby advises that an emergency speed limit has been set as described in clauses 1 to 4 and in the location(s) detailed in the Schedule of this notice.
This notice is the Wellington City Council—South Coast Roads Emergency Speed Limit.
This speed limit came into force on and from 5 May 2020.
This speed limit expires on 4 May 2021 unless revoked prior to 4 May 2021.
The purpose of this speed limit is to manage speeds on sections of the south coast roads between Owhiro Bay and Breaker Bay. Wellington City Council as the road controlling authority has identified there is a risk of danger to people on these roads due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Note: A greater number of pedestrians are using these roads since the COVID-19 restrictions have been introduced and when pedestrians obey the government guidelines in maintaining a two metre physical separation, pedestrians have been required to step onto the road where cars, trucks, buses and cyclists are travelling. In many cases the footpaths are narrow, intermittent or non-existent in places along the roads identified for the emergency speed limit.
Proposed speed limit for the named South Coast Roads in the Wellington City Council area are as follows:
