Prohibited Firearms Buy-Back Price List

Pursuant to Section 28M(3)(a) of the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Regulations 2019

Regulations 28H, 28I, 28M, 28N and 28O of the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Regulations 2019 came into force on 20 June 2019; the rest of these regulations will come into force on 21 June 2019. The new regulations allow for the buy-back of newly prohibited firearms and parts from owners within a six month amnesty period (by 20 December 2019).

To receive compensation for prohibited firearms you are required to have a valid firearms licence. If you are handing in parts and accessories included in the prohibited list, you do not need a firearms licence to receive compensation.

Before you take part in the buy-back process, there are certain steps you need to take if you have a prohibited firearm in your possession:

Notify the Police by registering your firearm/s online immediately at police.govt.nz.
Find out where you can take part in the buy-back process at a location close to you. There are various options such as firearms collection events – see Police website. If you do not have internet access, you may call 0800 311 311.
When handing in your firearms and parts in you will need to provide:
- Firearms and/or parts, with ammunition removed
- Your reference number from the Police online notification
- Your firearms licence (not necessary for parts)
- Your bank account number.

Understanding how the buy-back works for firearms

The buy-back price for prohibited firearms in this list reflects:

Brand and make/model
Base price - the value of the particular brand and model is dependent on whether it is a “Current model”, a “Superseded model” (i.e. new model prior to March 2019 on the market) or “Discontinued model”. The value is as advised by New Zealand firearms experts before the law change (i.e. just prior to March 2019).
Condition of the firearm - this is about the condition of the firearm that you are handing in for buy-back: is it new or near-new (95%); used (70%); or in poor (25%) condition? The condition criteria will be available online at www.police.govt.nz. The condition of the firearm is important as it reflects what percentage of the value you may receive as part of the buy-back process. Please see details in the table below.

PARTS AND ACCESSORIES

Items that are now prohibited and cannot be used on a non-prohibited firearm, such as magazines and suppressors, must also be handed in during the amnesty. It is not necessary that you have a valid firearms licence if you are just handing in parts and accessories as part of the buy-back process.
