Pursuant to section 5 of the Industry Training and Apprenticeships Act 1992, MITO is recognised as an industry training organisation for the following specified industries:

• Motor;
• Industrial Textile Fabrication;
• Commercial Road Transport (including State Sector and New Zealand Defence Force for road transport-related operations);
• Stevedoring and Ports;
• Road Transport Logistics and Warehousing;
• Freight Forwarding and Distribution;
• Extractives;
• Drilling;
• Gas; and
• Resource Recovery.

A condition of this recognition is that MITO satisfies the Tertiary Education Commission by 30 June 2019 that it has taken reasonable steps to avoid fragmentation and to provide a clear and representative motor industry focus.

The recognition takes effect from 20 October 2018.
