For the purposes of section 48 of the Coroners Act 2006 and section 31 of the Coroners Amendment Act 2016, “minute” (in relation to a body part or a bodily sample) is defined as any of the following:
- A body tissue sample taken by the pathologist for the purpose of enabling the creation of a slide for microscopic examination, as long as each discrete sample does not exceed 1.75cm3 in volume;
- bodily fluid taken by the pathologist for the purpose of laboratory analysis, as long as each discrete sample does not exceed:
- 25ml in volume in the case of stomach or bowel contents; or
- 15ml in volume in the case of any other bodily fluid;
- a blood spot card;
- a nail clipping or scraping;
- a sample of head or body hair, as long as each discrete sample does not exceed 50 strands; or
- any specimen swab that has been used to obtain a sample.
This notice comes into effect on 22 July 2016.
