Notice of Urgent Amendment to the Acceptable Solution for Structure (B1/AS1), and to Materials Incorporated by Reference into B1/AS1, and Where They are Available for Inspection and Purchase

Urgent Amendment to Acceptable Solution for Structure (B1/AS1)

Pursuant to sections 24(1) and 29(5)(b) of the Building Act 2004 (“Act”), I give notice of an urgent amendment to the Acceptable Solution for New Zealand Building Code clause B1 Structure (“B1/AS1”). The amendment modifies B1/AS1 to incorporate new glass barrier requirements that help to mitigate the risk of people falling from heights in the event the glass fractures.

The urgent amendment to B1/AS1 comes into force on 1 June 2016.

B1/AS1 is available for download free of charge from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (“MBIE”) website at:

www.building.govt.nz/building-code-compliance/b-stability/b1-structure.

In accordance with section 30(2) of the Act, the chief executive of MBIE will consult on and publicly notify whether they have decided to make this urgent amendment within six months of the date of this notice.

New Material Incorporated by Reference

As part of this urgent amendment, and pursuant to sections 406(c)(ii) and 410(1)(e) of the Act, I give notice that the following material will be incorporated by reference into B1/AS1 effective 1 June 2016:

  • NZS 4223.3: 2016

Consultation on this incorporation by reference will be carried out as part of the consultation under section 30(2) of the Act.
