Pursuant to section 47(1)(a) of Te Kawerau ā Maki Claims Settlement Act 2015 (“Act”), the Minister of Conservation hereby notifies that the area described in the Schedule hereto has been declared to be subject to an overlay classification by section 42 of the Act.

The provisions of the Act which relate to the whenua rāhui are sections 41–55.

Pursuant to section 47(1)(b) of the Act, the Minister hereby notifies that the following protection principles are directed at the Minister avoiding harm to, or the diminishing of, Te Kawerau ā Maki values related to Taumaihi:

1. Respect for and recognition of Te Kawerau ā Maki mana, tikanga and kaitiakitanga within Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve).
2. Recognition of the relationship of Te Kawerau ā Maki with the many wāhi tapu and wāhi whakahirahira within Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve) and its immediate environs.
3. Encourage respect for the association of Te Kawerau ā Maki with Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve).
4. Accurate portrayal of the association of Te Kawerau ā Maki with Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve).
5. Recognition of and respect for the presence of a Te Kawerau ā Maki urupā within Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve) and of Te Kawerau ā Maki access to it.
6. Recognition of Te Kawerau ā Maki kaitiakitanga in relation to the mauri and natural and historical values of Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve).
7. Protection of wāhi tapu, wāhi whakahirahira, indigenous flora and fauna and the wider environment of Taumaihi (Te Henga Recreation Reserve).
