Notice of Approved Official Geographic Names

Pursuant to sections 10(1)(b), 24(2)(a) and 24(3) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008 (“Act”), the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) hereby gives notice of 16 approved official geographic names as described in the Schedule below.

The Board’s final determinations on these approved official geographic names took effect on 28 May 2015.

Bay

A small bay within Putiki Bay at Ostend, Waiheke Island. NZTopo50-BA33 827253.

Cradock Channel

Channel

The central of three shipping channels between Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana and the Pacific Ocean. Passes between Te Hauturu-o-Toi / Little Barrier Island and Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island) and intersects with Jellicoe Channel and Colville Channel at its southern end. NZ Chart 53 35°59.65’S 175°19.25’E to 36°25.09’S, 175°06.03’E.

Jellicoe Cave

Cave

A cave at North Head in Whangaroa Bay at the entrance to Whangaroa Harbour, Northland. NZTopo50-AU28 690267.

Jellicoe Channel

Channel

The westernmost of three shipping channels between Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana and the Pacific Ocean, following the coast between Cape Rodney and Paepae-o-Tū / Bream Tail and intersecting with Cradock Channel and Colville Channel at its eastern end. NZ Charts 5219, 522, 53 36°01.20’S, 174°39.85’E to 36°25.09’S, 175°06.03’E.

Jellicoe Point

Point

A small point on the southeastern side of Lake Taupo (Taupomoana), approximately 4km southeast of Motutaiko Island. NZTopo50-BH36 577923.

Wellington Land District

Ataturk Memorial

Site

A memorial site for the WWI Gallipoli Campaign. Southeast of Wellington International Airport on the Eastern Walkway. NZTopo50-BQ31 524217.

Girdlestone

Hill

A 1546m peak in Tararua Range with geodetic mark code 1226 at summit. Immediately west of Mitre, the highest peak in Tararua Range. NZTopo50-BN34 061810.

Girdlestone Peak

Hill

A 2658m peak on Mount Ruapehu south of Crater Lake, above and south of Wahianoa and Mangaehehu Glaciers. NZTopo50-BJ34 214470.

Girdlestone Saddle

Pass

A pass between Mangahao River and the source of South Ohau River in Tararua Range. Approximately 14km southeast of Levin. NZTopo50-BN33 035893.

Canterbury Land District

Anzac Peaks

Hills

Twin peaks (2528m and 2513m) above Grand Plateau, at the eastern extreme of East Ridge on Aoraki / Mount Cook. Overlooks Caroline and Boys Glaciers to the south. NZTopo50-BX15 716681 and 718681.

Birdwood Range

Range

A range running approximately 16km to the southeast from Mount Avoca to The Spurs, between Wilberforce River to the west and Avoca River to the east. NZTopo50-BV20 700342 to BW20 753214.

Jellicoe Ridge

A ridge running south from Mount Rolleston to Mount Stewart, between Waimakariri and Crow Rivers. Approximately 6km west of Arthur’s Pass. NZTopo50-BV20 786480 to 769418.

Pyramus Peak

Hill

A 2253m peak in Two Thumb Range in the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. NZTopo50-BX17 070874.

Hill

A 2356m mountain above and south of the head of Bonar Glacier in Mount Aspiring National Park. Approximately 3km south of Mount Aspiring/Tititea. NZTopo50-CA11 589735.

Mount Joffre

A 2091m mountain above and south of Bonar Glacier in Mount Aspiring National Park. Approximately 3km southwest of Mount Aspiring/Tititea. NZTopo50-CA11 573743.
