Notice of Decisions to Alter, Approve, Discontinue and Adopt Undersea Feature Names

Pursuant to sections 10(1)(d), 24(2)(a), 24(3), 25 and 26 of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“Board”) hereby gives notice of 26 altered, approved, discontinued and adopted undersea feature names, within and beyond 12 nautical miles, as described in the Schedule below.

The Board’s final determination on these undersea feature names took effect on 28 May 2015.

44°10’S Latitude, 174°33’W Longitude. A cluster of volcanic knolls and hills located approximately 142km due east of Chatham Islands on Chatham Rise. Alteration from Andes Seamount Complex, which was depicted on Chatham Rise Chart©, Mackay et al, 2005.

Betty Guyot

Guyot

29°20’S Latitude, 174°00’E Longitude. A guyot type seamount that rises from a depth of about 1800m to a minimum depth of less than 500m, located approximately 570km north-northeast of North Cape, at the northern end of Three Kings Ridge. Depicted on Bathymetry of the Southwest Pacific Chart©, Menard et al., 1968. Adopted as official.

Bounty Ridge

47°30’S Latitude, 177°00’E Longitude. An undersea ridge that extends west from Bounty Islands to Pūkākī Seachannel on Bounty Plateau. The crest ranges from 700m to 1000m deep. Depicted on Bounty Chart©, Krause and Cullen, 1970. Adopted as official.

Broughton Gap

42°36.16’S Latitude, 187°27.48’E 172°32.52’W Longitude. A narrow break at the eastern extreme of Chatham Rise, approximately 400km northeast of Chatham Islands. Depicted on Chatham Chart©, Cullen, 1969. Adopted as official.

Calyptogena Bank

39°28.08S Latitude, 178°24.46E Longitude. A significant bank on Ritchie Ridge located approximately 50km southeast of Mahia Peninsula. It rises from a depth of 950m to 709m and has an area of 7.30km2. Depicted on Mahia Chart©, Arron and Lewis, 1992. Adopted as official.

Campbell Channel

47°10.38’S Latitude, 173°36.43’E Longitude. A tributary of Bounty Channel incised into the northern slope of Campbell Plateau. Extends from the northern flank of the Pūkākī Bank at a depth of 1000m, to Bounty Channel at a depth of 2300m. Depicted on Bounty Chart©, Krause & Cullen, 1970. Adopted as official.

Cavalli Valleys

34°50’S Latitude, 174°10’E Longitude. Several northeast-southwest trending valleys extending from 200m to at least 800m deep, located on Northland Plateau, approximately 50km northeast of Kerikeri. Alteration from Cavalli Canyons, which was depicted on Poor Knights Chart©, Eade, 1971.

Dolphin Spur

38°15’S Latitude, 165°00’E Longitude. A southwest trending spur east of Challenger Plateau separated from the plateau by Bellona Trough. It crests in the north at 1250m, in the centre to 1000m, and at its southern end to 1750m. Depicted on Chart NZ 24. Adopted as official.

Graveyard Knolls

42°45’S Latitude, 179°59’W Longitude. A cluster of volcanic knolls and hills located on Chatham Rise, approximately 270km northwest of Chatham Islands. Alteration from Graveyard Seamount Complex, which was depicted on Chatham Rise Chart©, Mackay et al, 2005.

Herekino Bank

35°14’S Latitude, 172°27.46’E Longitude. A small bank approximately 60km west of Herekino Harbour entrance, to the south of Ninety Mile Beach and north of Hokianga Harbour. Crest is at a depth of 650m. Depicted on Hokianga Chart©, Irwin & Eade, 1984. Adopted as official.

Hikunui Seavalley

36°31’07’’S Latitude, 176°59’E Longitude. A northeast-southwest aligned valley between a group of knolls to the north, and Hikurangi Ridge to the south. Its floor can be as deep as 2450m at its northern end. Depicted on Cuvier Chart©, Wright, 1989. Adopted as official.

Iselin Seamount

70°45’S Latitude, 178°15’W Longitude. Located in the Ross Dependency, approximately 385km east-northeast of Cape Adare. Depicted on Chart NZ 14065. Adopted as official.

Knights Seavalley

34°47.10’S Latitude, 175°09.25’E Longitude. A northeast-southwest sloping valley as shallow as 1000–1800m, located on the Northland Plateau approximately 80km northeast of Cape Brett. Depicted on Poor Knights Chart©, Mitchell, 1995. Adopted as official.

35°00.05’S Latitude, 175°08.21’E Longitude. A flat area with a depth of about 600m, located on the continental slope 60km northeast of Poor Knights Islands. Depicted on Poor Knights Chart©, Mitchell, 1995. Adopted as official.

Kupe Abyssal Plain

31°00’S Latitude, 176°30’E Longitude. A large expanse in the southern part of South Fiji Basin sloping gently towards the north with a depth of 4000–4300m. Recorded in at least two publicly available scientific journals published in 1975. Adopted as official.

44°35’S Latitude, 173°55’E Longitude. Located approximately 100km southeast of Banks Peninsula. Reaches depths of 1000m on the outer continental slope. Depicted on Banks Chart©, Herzer, 1977. Adopted as official.

Lottin Ridge

37°20.93’S Latitude, 178°17.57’E Longitude. Depicted on East Cape Chart©, Cullen, 1977. Recent bathymetric surveys show that the feature does not exist. No longer a recorded undersea feature name, and so is Discontinued.

Madden Channel

40°38’36’’S Latitude, 177°19’36’’E Longitude. The gentle-sided lower part of Madden Canyon that falls as deep as 2000m. Located approximately 60km east southeast of Cape Turnagain. Depicted on Turnagain Chart©, Garlick, 2002. Adopted as official.

Maria Ridge

34°10’S Latitude, 172°05’E Longitude. Depicted on Three Kings Chart©, van der Linden, 1968 as South Maria Ridge or North Maria Ridge, which are official undersea feature names. No longer a recorded undersea feature name, and so is Discontinued.

Mayor Channel

37°04’19.8’’S Latitude, 176°32’57.6’’E Longitude. A northeast trending channel northeast of Mayor Island (Tuhua) in outer Bay of Plenty. Reaches a depth of 1200m at its northern end, and shallows to 950m at the southern end. Depicted on Bay of Plenty Chart©, Wright, 1989. Adopted as official.

Monowai Spur

37°07.53’S Latitude, 162°59.54’E Longitude. A rise on the seafloor that reaches a depth of 2500m, located adjacent to, and south of, Monowai Sea Valley, approximately 1000km due west of Te Ika-a-Māui or North Island. Depicted on Bellona Chart©, Eade & van der Linden, 1977. Adopted as official.

Murimotu Seavalleys

34°02’S Latitude, 172°55’E Longitude. Two narrow valleys on the northeast facing continental slope, centred approximately 40km north of Cape Reinga (Te Rerengawairua) and 70km east of Manawatāwhi / Three Kings Islands. Depicted on North Cape Chart©, Mitchell & Eade, 1990. Adopted as official.

Te Motu-o-Kura Ridge

40°02’S Latitude, 177°22’E Longitude. A ridge, which trends northeast-southwest and rises to a minimum recorded depth of 324m, located approximately 80km northeast of Cape Turnagain. Alteration from Motu o Kura Ridge, which was depicted on Turnagain Chart©, Garlick & Mitchell, 2002.

Te Motu-o-Kura Trough

40°00’S Latitude, 177°13’E Longitude. A trough, which trends northeast-southwest and has an axis that ranges in depth from about 480m at the north-eastern end to 560m at the south-western end, located approximately 73km northeast of Cape Turnagain. Alteration from Motu o Kura Trough, which was depicted on Turnagain Chart©, Garlick & Mitchell, 2002.
