Pursuant to section 170 of the Education Amendment Act 1989, the Minister of Education gives the following notice.
N o t i c e
1. This notice may be cited as the University of Otago Council Constitution Notice 2013.
2. This notice shall come into force on the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
3. The council of the University of Otago shall be constituted as follows:
(a) Four members appointed by the Minister of Education;
(b) the vice-chancellor of the University of Otago;
(c) three permanent members of the academic staff of the University of Otago elected by the permanent members of that staff;
(d) one permanent member of the general staff of
the University of Otago elected by the permanent members of that staff;
(e) two members elected by the students of the University;
(f) one member appointed by the University of
Otago Council after consultation with the central organisation of employers as recognised under the Employment Relations Act 2000;
(g) one member appointed by the University of
Otago Council after consultation with the central organisation of workers as recognised under the Employment Relations Act 2000;
(h) one member, being a member of the Dunedin City Council appointed by that council;
(i) three members appointed by the University of Otago Council from among the graduates of the University; and
(j) up to three members co-opted by the University
of Otago Council if and when it thinks fit, taking
into account the specific needs of the University of Otago and in order to ensure sound governance
of the institution.
4. Subject to section 173 of the Education Act 1989, the maximum term for any member, other than the chief executive officer, shall be four years. A member of council, other than the chief executive officer, may serve for a maximum of four consecutive four-year terms.
5. The powers of the University of Otago Council shall not be affected by vacancy in the membership thereof.
6. The University of Otago Notice 2001 (published in the New Zealand Gazette, 2 August 2001, No. 81, page 1948), is hereby revoked.
