Application to Export and Import Marine Mammals

Pursuant to section 5 of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978, the Director-General of Conservation notifies that
an application was received from Scott Reeves, Collection Coordinator-Humanities, Otago Museum, on 13 May 2011 to export, on 1 July 2011, 17 pieces of whale bone and
five pieces of whale tooth (now forming part of taonga items) from New Zealand to the Shanghai Museum, China, for the purposes of a display of Maori taonga, culture and art.
It is sought to re-import these items to New Zealand for return to the Otago Museum on the conclusion of the exhibition in November 2011.

Any person wishing to make a submission on this application can do so by writing to the Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area Office within 28 days after publication of this notice.
Unless a person making a submission states to the contrary in the submission, that person will be deemed to give his/her consent to the release under the Official Information Act 1982 of all of the information in the submission.
