Intention to Revoke the Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Erection and Use of Scaffolds (1995)

Notice that the Secretary of Labour has asked the Minister of Labour to review the code of practice pursuant to section 20(1)(a) of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.
The current Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Erection and Use of Scaffolds (1995) sets out a statement of preferred work practices or arrangements for the health and safety practices for the safe erection and use of scaffolding.
The current code is fifteen years old and there have been a number of changes within the industry since the code was first published.
In July 2009 the revised Scaffolding Best Practice Guideline was published in a review led by Scaffolding and Rigging New Zealand (SARNZ) with Department of Labour input and support.
We are looking to revoke the current code in favour of these updated guidelines and are seeking input and feedback on the decision to revoke the code.
The current code is available on the Department of Labour’s website
www.dol.govt.nz
The key stakeholders that will be affected will primarily
be the scaffolding industry, the construction industry, and workers that work on or with scaffolding materials.
Interested parties are invited to comment on the proposed code.
Written submissions in relation to the approval of
this code can be made by mail to Scaffolding Approved Code of Practice Submissions, Technical Services, Department of Labour, PO Box 3705, Wellington, or email standards@dol.govt.nz with the subject line Scaffolding Approved Code of Practice Submissions.
Submissions close on Friday 9 April 2010.
Dated at Wellington this 18th day of February 2010.
CHRISTOPHER BLAKE, Secretary of Labour, Department of Labour.
