Notice Title

Notice Under the Health Act 1956—Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand

Pursuant to section 69O(1) of the Health Act 1956
(as amended by the Health (Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2007), notice is hereby given that the Associate Minister of Health has issued Drinking-Water Standards for
New Zealand 2005 (Revised 2008) to supersede and revoke the Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand 2005.
The Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand provide requirements for drinking-water safety by specifying
the maximum amounts of substances or organisms or contaminants or residues that may be present in
drinking-water, criteria for demonstrating compliance
with the Standards, and remedial action to be taken
in the event of non-compliance with the different aspects
of the Standards.
The Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand 2005 (Revised 2008) have been made after consultation with all interested persons who made submissions to the Ministry regarding the content of the 2005 Standards.
The differences between these new standards and the
old standards are primarily due to clarifications, corrections, alignments, or simplified compliance procedures of a minor or transitional nature.
The changes are largely included at the request of stakeholders following consultation. The Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand 2005 (Revised 2008) supersede and revoke the Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand 2005.
The Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand 2005 (Revised 2008) come into force on 31 December 2008.
A copy of the Drinking-Water Standards for New Zealand 2005 (Revised 2008) is displayed on the website of the Ministry at
www.moh.govt.nz/water
Copies may be viewed free of charge at the library of the Ministry of Health at 133 Molesworth Street, Wellington, or on application to a drinking-water assessor at any district health board public health unit in New Zealand.
