The New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp Regulations 1993
Open Season for Game in Fish and Game Regions
Under section 15 and section 16 of the Wildlife Act 1953, the Minister of Conservation declares an open season for game in the Fish and Game Regions, subject to the conditions specified in the First and Second Schedule of this notice.

The Minister of Conservation gives consent, under Section 17(2) of the Wildlife Act 1953, to the hunting or killing of game in the manner set out in this notice.

New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp
A game bird habitat stamp must be affixed to every licence to hunt or kill game. The following form of the 2006 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp is approved .








The 2006 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp has a face value of ten dollars ($10.00). A fee of two dollars ($2.00) only is payable for every game bird habitat stamp supplied with a licence to hunt or kill game.


FIRST SCHEDULE

Bag limits
No person shall have in that person’s possession on any one day, more than the number of game birds specified as the daily bag limit for the Fish and Game Region in which the game is taken, except on Sunday, 7 May 2006, a person may have in possession twice the number of game birds specified as the daily bag limit for Saturday, 6 May 2006.
A person may have in that person’s possession more game than specified above, if all such game is labelled with the following details:
(a) The name and address of the person by whom the game was taken;
(b) The number of the licence to hunt or kill game held by the person by whom the game was taken;
(c) The name of the Fish and Game Region by which that licence was issued;
(d) The name of the Fish and Game Regions in which the game was taken; and
(e) The date on which the game was taken.

Waiver of Restrictions on Baiting, and Methods of Taking Game Baiting for Waterfowl
Persons may hunt or kill game of the family Anatidae (waterfowl) during the open season for game in all Fish and Game Regions where food has been cast, thrown, placed or planted, either during the current open season for game, the thirty (30) days immediately prior to the season or any other time during the year.

Magazine Shotguns – unpinned magazine shotguns can be used in all regions
Persons may hunt or kill game birds, as specified, in all Fish and Game Regions with any unpinned magazine shotgun of a calibre 10 gauge or less, which includes magazine extensions.

Use of Lead Shot Prohibited
No person may possess lead shot, or use lead shot, while hunting or killing water fowl within 200 metres of open water, with any gun of a 10 or 12 gauge calibre. Non-toxic shot may be used, including steel.

For the purposes of this requirement, “water fowl” means any of the following game species:
Black swan (Cygnus atratus)
Canada goose (Branta canadensis)
Duck:
Grey duck (Anas superciliosa) and any cross of that species with any other species, variety, or kind of duck
Mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and any cross of that species with any other species, variety, or kind of duck)
Paradise duck (Tadorna variegata), also known as the Paradise shelduck
Spoonbill duck (New Zealand Shoveler) (Anas rhynchotis)
Pukeko (Porphyrio melanotus)

For the purposes of this requirement, “open water” means either:
(a) any area of land or seabed covered permanently or seasonally by water; or

(b) any area which is temporarily covered by water at the time of such possession or use of lead shot, and that is contiguous to an area referred to in paragraph (a);
and the area covered by water is wider than 3 metres.

Guns of a Calibre Less Than 12 Gauge and Muzzle Loaders Exempt in Relation to Use of Lead Shot
Hunters may continue to use lead shot in guns of a calibre less than 12 gauge or muzzle loaders for the 2006 season. This exemption will be reviewed before the 2007 game bird hunting season.
No exemption for any breach loading 12 gauge or greater is to be provided for waterfowl hunting.

Lead Shot Exemption for Molesworth/St James Organised Canada Goose Hunts
The use of lead shot within 200m of open water by hunters participating in the Fish and Game NZ organised Molesworth/St James Canada Goose Hunts will be permitted during the 2006-07 Game Bird Season. The lead shot exemption only applies to the hunting of Canada Geese on the Fish and Game organised hunts. Outside of these organised hunts the national lead shot ban applies.

Camouflaged Rowboats
Persons may hunt or kill game within the following Fish and Game Regions, from unmoored camouflaged rowboats, subject to the excluded periods for some regions specified below.

Registered Game Preserves
Any property listed under any heading of “Registered Game Preserve” in this notice is a registered game preserve for the purposes of this notice regardless of the property’s name.

Paradise Duck
Any reference to Paradise Shelduck in this Notice is to the same species referred to as Paradise Duck elsewhere in this Notice and the Wildlife Act 1953.

Pegging Day
1. A person, following purchase of a 2006/2007 Whole Season game bird hunting licence, can reclaim the stand claimed during the 2005 Game Season at any time prior to 10.00 a.m. on 9 April 2006 in all Fish and Game Regions.
2. Otherwise unclaimed stands can only be claimed any time after 10.00 a.m. on 9 April 2006 in all Fish and Game Regions.
3. A stand may be claimed by planting on it a stake having either a board or identifying label attached, having plainly marked on the board or identifying label the name of the claimant and
the number of his/her licence. The hunting stand claim tag provided with the licence must be completed with the name of the claimant and affixed to the board or identifying label.
4. The licence holder claiming a stand must be present in person at the stand when marking up such.
5. In the Auckland Waikato Region, only holders of 2006/2007 Whole Season Adult Game Bird Licences can claim hunting stands.
6. No one can claim more than one stand.
7. A stand cannot be claimed closer than 90 metres to a stand already claimed by another person without that person’s consent.
8. Any stand not occupied by the claimant within one hour after the opening hour of hunting, on any day, can be occupied by another licence holder for the remainder of the day.

Conditions
1. These approvals shall not derogate from the principal conditions specified for each Fish and Game Region under the Second Schedule, which shall apply.
2. These approvals will expire at the end of the open season for game specified under the Second Schedule for each Fish and Game Region.

Definition of Area A
All lands north of a line running east/west, north of the Whangape Harbour, then along the main ridgeline of the Maungataniwha Range and out to and including all lands north of Whangaroa Harbour.

Shooting Hours
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that for the hunting of Paradise Shelduck on 24 and 25 February 2007, shooting hours will be from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
1. No person shall wilfully leave on the hunting ground any game bird(s) shot or parts of any game bird(s) shot.
2. Camouflaged Rowboats: Persons may hunt or kill game from an unmoored camouflaged rowboat.
3. During the 24 and 25 February 2007 Special Paradise Shelduck Season, there shall be no hunting within 500 metres of any urban sewage oxidation ponds.
Registered Game Preserves (pheasant)
Lindale Hunting and Fishing Bay of Islands Ltd: The preserve is being operated on the property of Lemon Holdings, east of Whangae Road, Kawakawa and is bounded by native bush on the north, south and east.

Shooting Hours
Shooting hours are 6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that Canada geese may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day for the 24 hour Canada goose season; 6.30 a.m. 6 June 2006 to 6.30 p.m. 17 June 2006, and 6.30 a.m. 3 July 2006 to 6.30 p.m. 27 August 2006 inclusive.

Decoy Limit
No limit, except on Lake Waikare – a total decoy limit of 50 decoys per stand and no decoys to be placed within 50 metres of those placed by another hunter.

Special Conditions
1. From 6 May to 2 July 2006 inclusive, no person may use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Waikare, any drifting or temporarily moored floating stand or any stand, hide or maimai which is permanently fixed to the lake bed except within 180 metres of the outer margin of the lake or the shoreline of Motu Nuia Island (Grape Island).
2. Floating maimais are allowed on Lake Waikare following conclusion of the duck hunting season to provide greater opportunity to target Canada geese.
3. No person may use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Ngaroto any fixed stand, pontoon, hide or maimai except within 85 metres of the margin of the lake.
4. No person may use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Rotokauri any fixed stand, pontoon, hide or maimai on any open water of the lake.
5. No person may wilfully leave on the hunting ground any game bird(s) shot or parts of any game birds shot.
6. No person may herd or drive waterfowl for the purpose of hunting or killing them.
7. No person may shoot game from any unmoored boat on the Waikato River north of the boat ramp at the confluence of the Mangawara Stream and the Waikato River at Taupiri on any of the first three days or the second weekend of the open season.
8. No person may possess a firearm in or on any unmoored vessel, except a rowboat, unless the firearm is dismantled or secured in a case, gunslip or other secure compartment, except when in use to retrieve wounded game.
9. On public land the last (tagged owner) must remove any maimai not tagged up for 2 years from the date of the last mark-up.

Closed Game Areas
1. All that area of the Waikato River below Mean High Water Spring Tide from the Tasman Sea inland to an imaginary line commencing from a marker at the exit of the Fisherman’s Road drain on the north-western side of the river in Block VII, Maioro Survey District, bearing 126 degrees true to a marker on the south-eastern side of the river.
2. The Kaitoke Creek, Great Barrier Island and its tributaries, and an area 100 metres in width on either bank from the main road bridge over the Kaitoke Creek upstream to the southern boundary of Allotment 185, Aotea Parish, and the eastern boundary of the State Forest Reserve, the Awana Stream and an area 100 metres in width on either bank from its confluence with the sea at
low-water mark to the point where the main tributary flowing across Allotment 178, Aotea Parish, meets the Awana Stream; the Saltwater Creek and an area 100 metres in width on either bank from its confluence with the sea at Oruawhara Bay to a point where the south-east boundary of Allotment NW 74, Aotea Parish, crosses the creek.
3. All DP 23519, being part Maungatapu Block, Blocks II and VI, Maungakawa Survey District, being 15 hectares, the property of A. C. Allen, Riverdale, Piako, Morrinsville.
4. The township of Te Aroha.
5. All that area lying to the east of the Southern Motorway and known as Pahurehure Inlet.
6. 129 hectares, being part of the Manukau Harbour known as Waimahia Creek (excluding the oxidation pond).
7. Plan DP S81922 of Lots 1-6, subdivision of part Lot 7, DP 9441 and part Section 19, Block II, Whitianga Survey District, 53.3353 hectares. Property of Andrew Hill.

Definition of Areas
The following descriptions refer to Local Authority Boundaries described on the Infomap 242B-2 Department of Survey and Land Information (now Land Information New Zealand) for the Eastern Region Fish and Game Council region.
Area A1: Tauranga District, Western Bay of Plenty District, that part of the South Waikato District within the Eastern Fish and Game region and east of State Highway No. 1, Rotorua District, Kawerau District, Whakatane District and Opotiki District.
Area A2: Those parts of the South Waikato District west of State Highway No. 1 within the Eastern Fish and Game region, Taupo District and Ruapehu District, which lie within the Eastern Fish and Game region.
Area B1: Gisborne District.
Area B2: That part of Wairoa District within the Eastern Fish and Game region.

Closed Game Areas
The closed game area for Waewaetutuki (Waewaetutuki 8B, Block 1, Waihi South Survey district and comprising all of Computer Freehold Register SA3D/627) Reference, Game Gazette, 3 March 2003, Issue No. 20, Page 611, is revoked.

Shooting Hours
6.15 a.m. to 6.15 p.m., except that in Areas A1, A2, and B1 from the 3 July 2006 to 27 August 2006 and
3 and 4 February 2007, Canada geese may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day. For Area B2, Canada geese may only be hunted 24 hours from 3 to 4 March 2007 inclusive. Paradise Shelduck may be hunted 24 hours per day from 3 to 4 March 2007 inclusive in that area north of the Uawa River, Tolaga Bay.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Magazine Capacity
Unpinned magazine shotguns to manufacturer’s specifications may be used.

Maimais
No maimai shall impede the use of navigable channels in the Tauranga Harbour, Ohiwa Harbour, Little Waihi Estuary, Lake Aniwhenua and Lake Taupo.
Maimais erected in the Little Waihi Estuary, Lake Aniwhenua, Ohiwa Harbour, Stump and Waihi bays
of Lake Taupo must be dismantled and removed within 2 weeks of the close of the season (i.e. by
10 September 2006).

Registered Game Preserves (pheasant):
(i) Titoki Hereford Stud: The property situated along a 4 kilometre road frontage, at the top of Tikitere Hill from above Hell’s Gate to opposite Moose Lodge entrance. Bounded by Fletcher Challenge Tikitere Forest and Okataina Scenic Reserve.
(ii) Benner’s Brothers Farm: Located 8 kilometres up the Bush Road from Pongokawa. Bounded by Pongakawa River and Rotoehu Forest and Bush Road.
(iii) Equine Farm: Located approximately 6 kilometres in a north-west direction from Lake Rotoehu with Rotoehu Road and Fletcher Challenge’s Rotoehu Forest on the main boundaries. Property is made up of 283 hectares being entirely enclosed within deer fence.
(iv) Treetops: Located Hearoa Road, Horohoro, being some 470 hectares with frontage to Great West Road, and bounded by the Horohoro Bluffs, the extremities of the property being enclosed within deer fencing.
(v) Otama Partnership: Located 1559 Rangiuru Road, bounded by Rangiuru Road, Te Matai Road and Mangorewa River, being part Lot 9, DP S90953, Block XIV, Maketu Survey District.
(vi) Habitat Game Birds: Located 448 Allport Road, Te Puke. Being 72 hectares north of Allport Road and south of Public Road (Section 12, Block XI, Maketu Survey District and Lot 1,
DP S91507) and 74 hectares south of Allport Road and north of Pokopoko Stream (Part Section 13, Block XI, Maketu Survey District).
(vii) Ngapuke Farm: The property is situated at 416 Pongakawa Bush Road, Paengaroa, bounded by John Morrow to the north, John Scarrow to the south and Blaymeyers to the west.

Registered Game Preserves:
(i) Poronui Station: Located at the end of Taharua Road, 20 kilometres east of the Napier-Taupo Road. Bordered at the east by Wharetoto 5B Trust land, to the south by the Mohaka River and East Taupo Lands Trust land, and the west by the Kaimanawa Forest Park.
(ii) Whanawhana Trust property: Lots 2 and 3, DP 24970, namely that area north and south of Whanawhana Road, Whanawhana, bordered by the Ngaruroro River in the south and the Otamauri stream in the north.
(iii) Glencoe Station: Located in Central Hawke’s Bay 8 kilometres south of Maraekakaho on State Highway No. 50. The property is 1200 hectares bounded by Whakapirau Road at the back and private farm land on each side. These farms are owned by Mark Taylor, Graham De Gruchy, John Mulcaster, Nick Buckholt, John McPhee and Edwards brothers.
(iv) Tuna Nui Station: Bounded by Flag Range Road to the east, the Waikonini Creek and Rauwhenua Forest in the west and north respectively and the Napier-Taihape Road to the south.

Area B: That area within the following boundary commencing at Waiaruhe Road. Then by that road, Owhakura Road, Whangaehu Valley Road and Fields Track to Kakatahi. Then by straight lines to Pipiriki and Makakaho Junction down the eastern bank of the Waitotara River to the sea. Then by the sea coast and generally eastern boundary of the region to Waiaruhe Road.
Area C: The balance of the region contained by the westerly boundaries of Area A and B and the sea coast between the Mokau and Waitotara river mouths.

Area A: Tararua/Northern and Eastern Wairarapa. All of the Wellington region east of main Ruahine and Tararua/Rimutaka ranges outside of Area A1.
Area A1: That part of the Wellington region that is east of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges, to the Waingawa River, south of that river and the Ruamahanga River to Wardells Bridge and then west of the Masterton-Martinborough Road to the Huangarua River, Ruakokapatuna River, and Aorangi Range to Cape Palliser.
Area B: Rangitikei/Northern Manawatu. All of the Wellington region west of main Ruahine and Tararua/Rimutaka ranges outside of Area B1.
Area B1: That part of the Wellington region that is south of the railway line from Marton to the Manawatu Gorge and then west of the Tararua and Rimutaka ranges to Turakirae Head.

Hours of Shooting
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., excluding Canada geese that may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
Summer Hunting Registration 2007: Hunters participating in the summer goose season must register with the Fish and Game Council prior to hunting.

Definition of Areas
Wairau Lagoons
That area defined as all open waters, islands and the peninsula between Chandlers Lagoon and Big Lagoon, south of the Wairau River mouth, including Te Aropipi Channel and south to the White Bluffs.

Pheasant Area
The area west of the Bryant Range, north of State Highway No. 63 from St Arnaud to Kawatiri Junction, and east of the Hope and Arthur Ranges.


Motueka River Bermland
The area adjacent to the Motueka River downstream of the Alexandra Bluff Bridge within the boundaries of State Highway No. 61 and Old Wharf Road to the east and the Motueka River West Bank Road, Umukuri Road and Lodder Lane in the west.

Waimea River Bermland
That area known as the Waimea Bermland contained within the stopbanks (or a 200 metre strip from both riverbanks where stopbanks are not present) of the Waimea and Wairoa Rivers up to the junction of the Lee River and the Wai-iti River up to State Highway No. 6 (Wai-iti Bridge).

East Coast/Kaikoura Area
The area to the east of the Awatere Valley/Molesworth Road and the Redwood Pass Road.

Shooting Hours
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. during May, then 6.45 a.m. to 6.15 p.m. until the end of Dabbling Duck Season 2006. Canada geese may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day after 30 July 2006.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
1. All permanent hunting stands/maimais used for the purposes of hunting of game on the Wairau Lagoons must be situated above the mean high water level.
2. Moored camouflaged boats are permitted for hunting or killing game in the Wairau Lagoons, but shall not be within 200 metres of any other hunting stand.
Certain farmers who hunt their own property are allowed under section 19 of the Wildlife Act to do so without having to purchase a licence, although they are subject to this notice and the regulations. Those farmers who wish to do so can receive a current copy of the regional newsletter and national magazine. Contact the Nelson Fish and Game Office to place your address on the mailing list.

Special Condition
No person shall wilfully leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of any gamebird shot in this region.

Definition of Areas
Area A: All that part of the region encompassing Lake Wainono and Wainono Reserve and bounded to the north by Hook Beach Road, the west by State Highway No. 1, the south by Poingdestres Road and the east by the Pacific Ocean.
Area B: That part of the bed of the Waitaki River between Lake Waitaki Dam and the sea.
Area C: That part of the region not included in Area A and Area B.
Area D: That part of the region north of the Opihi River only over agricultural grain crops and green feed paddocks and more than 200 m from any water body.
Chukar Hunting: Chukar hunting is by permit only. Permits are available on request from the Fish and Game office in Temuka.

Registered Game Preserves
Dorset Downs Game Preserve: That fenced area of Dorset Downs Station at Maungati near Timaru, marked with signposts reading Dorset Downs Game Preserve.
Ngahere Game Ranch: That fenced area of Ngahere Station adjoining Upper Mill Road, Waimate, marked with signposts reading Ngahere Game Ranch.

Shooting Hours
6.45 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that during the period 1 June 2006 to 8 April 2007 inclusive, Canada geese may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.

Decoy Limit
Lake Wainono and the Wainono Reserve: From opening day to the second Sunday after opening day, no person or persons sharing a stand shall use more than 25 decoys. No decoys to be placed within 50 metres of those placed by occupant(s) of another stand.
Rest of season: No limit.

Definition of Areas
Area A: The Clutha River catchment upstream from the Clyde Dam.

Area B: The Clutha River catchment downstream from the Clyde Dam; the Taieri River catchment and all the coastal catchments between Shag Point and The Brothers Point on the east coast of the South Island.

Registered Game Preserves
(i) Bendigo Hunting Preserve: Bendigo Hunting Preserve is defined as that fenced area of Bendigo station property at Bendigo, near Lake Dunstan, Central Otago, marked with signposts reading “Bendigo Hunting Preserve”.
(ii) Craigneuk Hunting Preserve: Craigneuk Hunting Preserve is defined as approx 513 Hectares of Craigneuk Station encompassing the three forks of Dingo Creek and marked on the boundaries with signposts reading “Craigneuk Hunting Preserve”.


Shooting Hours
7.00 a.m. to 6.45 p.m. Area A; 7.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Area B, except that during the period 24 July 2006 to 31 March 2007 inclusive, Canada geese may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.

Decoy Limit
No limit.

Special Conditions
1. No person shall use or cause to be used on any water within the region for the hunting or killing of game, any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, loo or maimai, except within a distance of 10 metres from the water margin in non?tidal waters, or from the low water mark in tidal waters, or from the outside edge of the raupo growth where raupo abounds, without the prior consent of the Otago Fish and Game Council.
2. No person may leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of Black swan or other game shot in the Otago Fish and Game Region.
3. Shooting from a boat is prohibited on the Clutha River on the opening weekend only.
4. Canada geese can be hunted during the closed season if an authorisation is obtained from the Otago Fish and Game Council.
