Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kawakawa Mai

Tawhiti Establishment
Pursuant to sections 146 and 155 of the Education Act 1989, the Minister of Education hereby gives the following notice.
N o t i c e
1. This notice may be cited as Te Kura Kaupapa Maori
o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti Establishment.
2. This notice shall come into force the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
3. I hereby establish in Matakaoa a full primary school called Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti and designate the school as a Kura Kaupapa Maori.
4. The school will operate in accordance with Te Aho Matua.
5. The special characteristics of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori
o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti are that that kura aims to:
? provide a quality education in te reo Maori for the children of Matakaoa including the specific needs of
the children who have attended Te Kohanga Reo;
? encourage children to learn te reo Maori in a positive, supportive environment and to appreciate their local surroundings and heritage;
? identify and address the educational, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of a Maori child and ensure that
the children of the Matakaoa area received a holistic approach to education in te reo Maori;
? give the people of Matakaoa the option to educate their children in te reo Maori and encourage parents, whanau and iwi to participate in the educational well being of their children;
? deliver the New Zealand curriculum as outlined in
the National Curriculum Documents in te reo Maori to families who desire this education option and endeavour to foster children who will have fluency in te reo Maori, who will receive a quality education and who will be unlimited by their choices in life;
? provide a high standard of education in te reo in conjunction with the teacher, the kura, the whanau
and the iwi of Matakaoa.
Constitution of the Board of Trustees
6. The board of trustees of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori
o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti shall comprise:
(a) five people appointed by the Minister of Education;
(b) the principal or principal designate; and
(c) not more than four people co-opted by the board.

The school will become operational on 1 January 2006. The present kura teina, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti, will cease to exist as from that date.
