Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Tonga

o Hokianga Establishment
Pursuant to sections 146 and 155 of the Education Act 1989, the Minister of Education hereby gives the following notice.
N o t i c e
1. This notice may be cited as Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Tonga o Hokianga Establishment.
2. This notice shall come into force the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
3. I hereby establish in Whirinaki, South Hokianga, a full primary school called Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Tonga
o Hokianga and designate the school as a kura kaupapa Maori.
4. The school will operate in accordance with Te Aho Matua.
5. The special characteristics of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori
o Te Tonga o Hokianga are that the kura aims to:
(i) provide a quality education in te reo Maori for the children of South Hokianga including the specific needs of children who have attended te kohanga reo;
(ii) encourage children to learn te reo Maori in a positive, supportive environment and to appreciate their local surroundings and heritage;
(iii) identify and address the educational, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of Maori children and ensure that the children of South Hokianga receive
a holistic approach to education in te reo Maori;
(iv) give the people of South Hokianga the option to educate their children in te reo Maori and encourage parents, whanau and iwi to participate in the educational well-being of their children;
(v) deliver the national curriculum documents in te reo Maori to families who desire this education option and endeavour to foster children who will have fluency in te reo Maori, who will receive a quality education and who will be unlimited by their choices in life; and
(vi) provide a high standard of education in te reo Maori in conjunction with the teacher, the kura, the whanau and the iwi of South Hokianga.
Constitution of the Board of Trustees
6. The Board of Trustees of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Tonga o Hokianga shall comprise:
(a) five people appointed by the Minister of Education;
(b) the principal, or principal designate; and
(c) not more than four people co-opted by the board.

Explanatory Note
This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.
The school will become operational on 1 October 2005. The present kura teina, Te Tonga o Hokianga, will cease to exist as from that date.
