Te Whanau o Tupuranga Establishment

Pursuant to sections 146 and 156 of the Education Act 1989, I hereby give the following notice:
N o t i c e
1. This notice may be cited as Te Whanau o Tupuranga establishment.
2. The notice shall come into force on the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
3. I hereby establish in Auckland a composite school called Te Whanau o Tupuranga, catering for Years 7–13, and designate the school as a Designated Character School.
Aims, purposes and objectives of Te Whanau
o Tupuranga
4. The following aims, purposes and objectives constitute the character of Te Whanau o Tupuranga:
(i) To provide a learning environment where Maori tikanga, language and knowledge are the norm.
(ii) To enable children to live as Maori at school, to develop the skills and knowledge to actively participate as citizens of the world, to enjoy good health and a high standard of living.
(iii) To provide a holistic Maori learning environment based on the philosophy and practice of whanaungatanga.
(iv) To honour the Treaty of Waitangi.
(v) To provide Maori whanau in Otara with a
marae-based Maori bilingual option for children beyond Year 6.
(vi) To comply with the National Education Guidelines.
(vii) To give students participation in decision-making in curriculum content and planning.
(viii) To develop classroom practice where Maori knowledge is normal, valid and legitimate, and guides classroom interactions and learning.
(ix) To ensure that children will be secure in their knowledge about the Maori world to enable them to participate in the wider world.
(x) To involve parents and wider whanau in the education of their children, in culturally familiar ways that are empowering.
(xi) To foster high expectations for excellence in learning – culturally, socially and academically, so Maori children have choices for their futures.
Constitution of the Board of Trustees
5. The Board of Trustees of Te Whanau o Tupuranga shall comprise:
(a) five people appointed by the Minister of Education;
(b) the principal, or principal designate; and
(c) not more than four people co-opted by the board.
