Under the Reserves Act 1977, the Conservator for the Bay of Plenty Conservancy of the Department of Conservation grants representatives of Ngati Awa iwi the right to bury the bones of unknown deceased Maori that were unearthed in Matata in October 2003, in the ancestral burial ground situated within the boundaries of the Kaokaoroa Historic Reserve described in the Schedule.
