Notice of Final Decisions to Assign Place Names in the Ross Sea Region, Antarctica

Pursuant to the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, notice is hereby given of the final decisions of the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to assign the names stated in the first column of the Schedule below to the places described in the second column of the said Schedule and that such decisions took effect on the dates shown.

Colleen, Lake 78 02'S Latitude, 163 52'E Longitude. An elliptical lake 1km long and 0.5km wide, between the Garwood and Joyce Glaciers.
21 October 1999:
Lane Plateau 84 23'S Latitude, 175 26'E Longitude. A flat, ice-covered plateau that rises to 3000m between Mount Waterman, Mount Cartwright and Mount Bronk in the central Hughes Range of the Queen Maud Mountains. The plateau trends north-south for 15km and is 4km wide.

Ainley Peak 77 30'S Latitude, 169 02'E Longitude. A prominent peak (1240m) located 5km south?west of Post Office Hill in east Ross Island.
Anne Hill 78 14'S Latitude, 162 43'E Longitude. The most prominent hill on Radian Ridge in Royal Society Range, Victoria Land. It rises to 2079m at the east side of Lava Tongue Pass.
Anniversary Bluff 78 33'S Latitude, 164 15'E Longitude. A rock bluff 2.5km west of Birthday Bluffs on the south side of Mason Spur, Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The bluff rises to c. 1300m.
Belgrave, Mount 76 36'S Latitude, 162 01'E Longitude. A prominent rock summit that rises over 1200m about 2.5km west of Mount Creak. The feature overlooks the north side of Fry Glacier at the south extremity of Kirkwood Range.
Bellafronto Bight 78 13'S Latitude, 165 06'E Longitude. An ice-filled embayment between the base of the west side of Brown Peninsula and the low north-west foot of Mount Discovery, on Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The bight extends south-west/north-east for 10km from Hahn Island to Swyers Point.
Birthday Bluffs 78 33'S Latitude, 164 22'E Longitude. Rock bluffs that rise to 1296m between Anniversary Bluff and Windscoop Bluff on the south side of Mason Spur, Scott Coast, Victoria Land.
Boney Point 76 39'S Latitude, 162 43'E Longitude. A rock point along the south side of the entrance to Tripp Bay in Victoria Land.
Brough Nunatak 76 31'S Latitude, 162 27'E Longitude. A nunatak in the north-west part of Evans Piedmont Glacier, 6.5km west south-west of Boney Point, Victoria Land.
Bulfinch Ridge 76 29'S Latitude, 162 13'E Longitude. A ridge 6.5km long, that extends east from the north part of Endeavour Massif, Kirkwood Range, Victoria Land.
Cis, Mount 77 34'S Latitude, 166 19'E Longitude. A hill (184m) located 1.8km north-east of Cape Barne in west Ross Island.
Cleary, Mount 76 27'S Latitude, 161 58'E Longitude. A summit that overlooks Pa Tio Tio Gap from the south. It rises over 1400m at the north extremity of Endeavour Massif in Kirkwood Range.
Cole, Lake 78 09'S Latitude, 166 13'E Longitude. An ice-covered lake 2.5km long located south of Mount Ewart and Mount Melania on Black Island in the Ross Archipelago.
Cowie Nunatak 77 08'S Latitude, 160 21'E Longitude. A bold bluff-type nunatak (1782m) with a cliffed east face, located 8km west of Detour Nunatak in the upper part of Mackay Glacier, Victoria Land.
Curtiss, Mount 77 06'S Latitude, 162 26'E Longitude. A peak (c. 1300m) at the east end of the main ridge of Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land.
Davison Peak 77 53'S Latitude, 164 04'E Longitude. A coastal peak (1340m) located 3km east of Hobbs Peak in Denton Hills, Victoria Land.
Denton Hills 78 05'S Latitude, 163 55'E Longitude. A group of rugged foothills, 38km longsouth-west/north-east and 14.5km wide, to the east of Royal Society Range on Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The feature comprises a series of east-trending ridges and valleys circumscribed by Howchin Glacier, Armitage Saddle, Blue Glacier, the coast and Walcott Bay. The highest summits, Mount Kowalczyk (1703m) and Goat Mountain (1634m) rise from Hobbs Ridge in the north part of the foothills. Elevations decrease southward as in Kahiwi Maihao Ridge (1045m) near the centre of the group and Xanadu Hills (820m) at the south end. The principal glaciers (Hobbs, Blackwelder, Salmon, Garwood, Joyce, Rivard, Miers, Adams, Ward) flow east but have receded, leaving several dry valleys.
Dibble Bluff 78 07'S Latitude, 167 13'E Longitude. A conspicuous rock bluff 1.6km south of Marshall Cirque on the west side of White Island, Ross Archipelago. The bluff rises abruptly from McMurdo Ice Shelf to over 400m.
Discovery Glacier 78 20'S Latitude, 164 30'E Longitude. A broad glacier, 14.5km long, between Hurricane Ridge and Mount Discovery on Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The glacier flows north to coalesce with the east margin of lower Koettlitz Glacier.
Discovery, Lake 78 20'S Latitude, 164 15'E Longitude. A lake, 5km long, situated at the north end of Hurricane Ridge on the west margin of Discovery Glacier, Scott Coast, Victoria Land.
Dreary Isthmus 78 12'S Latitude, 165 17'E Longitude. A low, narrow neck of land, or isthmus, that joins the base of Brown Peninsula and the low morainal area north of Mount Discovery, Scott Coast, Victoria Land.
Dunbar Head 78 38'S Latitude, 164 10'E Longitude. A projecting rock headland at the south end of Scott Coast, 18km south-east of the summit of Mount Morning. The feature rises to over 200m and overlooks Ross Ice Shelf midway between Eastface Nunatak and Birthday Bluffs.
Eastwind Glacier 77 37'S Latitude, 168 16'E Longitude. A glacier that drains part of the south slopes of Mount Terror in south-east Ross Island. It flows south-west and coalesces with the east margin of Terror Glacier where the two glaciers enter Fog Bay.
Eggers, Lake 78 06'S Latitude, 165 25'E Longitude. An ice-covered lake, 1km long, located just east of Rainbow Ridge in central Brown Peninsula, Scott Coast, Victoria Land.
Endeavour Massif 76 33'S Latitude, 162 02'E Longitude. A huge, flat-topped massif on the Scott Coast of Victoria Land. The massif extends south from Pa Tio Tio Gap to Fry Glacier and forms the south block of the Kirkwood Range (Robertson Massif forms the north block). Shoulder Mountain, Mount Belgrave and Mount Creak rise from the south part of the massif. Steep coastal cliffs and projecting ridges mark the east margin, but there is a gentle slope west from the massif's broad, plateau-like snow summit.
Endeavour Piedmont Glacier 77 23'S Latitude, 166 40'E Longitude. A piedmont glacier, 9.5km long and 3km wide, between the south-west part of Mount Bird and Micou Point, Ross Island.
Estes, Mount 78 16'S Latitude, 166 18'E Longitude. A flattish mountain 4km south of Mount Aurora in the south part of Black Island, Ross Archipelago. The mountain rises to 600m and is similar to the flat Cape Beck massif that forms the south end of the island.
Ewart, Mount 78 08'S Latitude, 166 08'E Longitude. An ice-free mountain rising to 213m at the north-west side of Lake Cole and 2.5km west of Mount Melania, Black Island, in Ross Archipelago.
Fritter Glacier 77 08'S Latitude, 162 35'E Longitude. A glacier between Mount Curtiss and Mount Jensen in Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land. It flows east to Wilson Piedmont Glacier.
Gandalf Ridge 78 21'S Latitude, 164 07'E Longitude. A volcanic ridge at the north-west end of Hurricane Ridge, to the north of Mount Morning on Scott Coast.
Glacier Ridge 77 35'S Latitude, 167 16'E Longitude. A broad north-south ridge, 7km long and 1km wide, on the south slopes of Mount Erebus, Ross Island. Completely ice covered, the ridge descends from c. 2200m to 600m, terminating 3.3km north-west of Tyree Head.
Glezen Glacier 76 32'S Latitude, 162 18'E Longitude. A glacier that flows east from Endeavour Massif, Kirkwood Range, Victoria Land. The glacier flows along the north side of Ketchum Ridge to Tripp Ice Tongue.
Griffiths Glacier 77 10'S Latitude, 162 20'E Longitude. Prominent cirque-type glacier located north-east of Crisp Glacier in Gonville and Caius Range, Victoria Land. It drains east south-east to Debenham Glacier to the east of Second Facet.
Guyon, Mount 78 25'S Latitude, 158 17'E Longitude. A bluff-type mountain with a small summit area, 2541m. It rises at the west side of Deception Glacier and forms the highest elevation in Warren Range.
Hedblom Glacier 76 34'S Latitude, 162 24'E Longitude. A glacier between Mount Creak and Tito Peak that flows east from Endeavour Massif to Tripp Ice Tongue, Victoria Land.
Hurricane Ridge 78 24'S Latitude, 164 12'E Longitude. The eastern of two broad, mainly ice-free ridgesthat descend north from Mount Morning, Scott Coast, Victoria Land. Gandalf Ridge andLake Discovery are located at the north end of this ridge.
Irving Glacier 76 13'S Latitude, 160 16'E Longitude. A glacier that flows north-west between Coombs Hills and Wyandot Ridge to enter Odell Glacier, in the Convoy Range, Victoria Land.
Kappen Cliffs 76 56'S Latitude, 162 22'E Longitude. Steep rock cliffs that form the south edge of Kar Plateau on Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The cliffs are 9km long and rise to 600m.
Ketchum Ridge 76 33'S Latitude, 162 20'E Longitude. The largest ridge that extends east from the south part of Endeavour Massif, Kirkwood Range.
Kienle Cirque 78 04'S Latitude, 167 21'E Longitude. An ice-filled cirque 3km wide, the largest cirque on the west side of White Island, Ross Archipelago.
Kuechle Island 77 52'S Latitude, 165 13'E Longitude. Island lying 1.6km north-west of Uberuaga Island that is the northern-most feature in Dailey Islands, McMurdo Sound.
Lettau Bluff 76 57'S Latitude, 167 00'E Longitude. A rock and ice bluff that forms the central part of the west edge of Beaufort Island. It rises 200m above Ross Sea.
Margaret Hill 78 12'S Latitude, 162 55'E Longitude. A peak rising to 1874m in on R³cker Ridge, 8km east of Mount R³cker, Royal Society Range, Victoria Land.
Marshall Cirque 78 05'S Latitude, 167 16'E Longitude. An ice-filled cirque 1.6km wide, located 1.6kmsouth-west of Kienle Cirque on the west side of White Island, Ross Archipelago.
Maumee Bight 77 29'S Latitude, 166 21'E Longitude. A bight between Rocky Point and Micou Point on the west side of Ross Island. The feature is 9.6km long and forms the south part of Wohlschlag Bay.
McIntosh Cliffs 78 32'S Latitude, 166 24'E Longitude. A line of steep, uneven, volcanic bluffs or cliffs, 25.7km long, forming the south-west side of the Minna Bluff peninsula, at the south end of Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The height of the cliffs increases from west to east, ranging from 400-600m above Ross Ice Shelf.
Melania Ridge 78 09'S Latitude, 166 17'E Longitude. A basalt ridge running south-east for 5km from Mount Melania, Black Island, in Ross Archipelago.
Minna Hook 78 36'S Latitude, 167 06'E Longitude. A massive hook-shaped volcanic feature, 14.5km long and rising to 1115m, that forms the south-east termination of the peninsula named Minna Bluff at the south end of Scott Coast.
Moraine Strait 78 12'S Latitude, 165 48'E Longitude. A strait on the McMurdo Ice Shelf that trends north?south between Brown Peninsula, Mount Discovery, and Minna Bluff on the west, and Black Island on the east.
Newport Point 77 32'S Latitude, 166 10'E Longitude. The south entrance point to Horseshoe Bay in west Ross Island.
Pa Tio Tio Gap 76 25'S Latitude, 161 57'E Longitude. A glacier-filled gap at 1000m. It trends east-west between Robertson Massif and Endeavour Massif in Kirkwood Range, Victoria Land.
Pakaru Icefalls 77 38'S Latitude, 166 39'E Longitude. Icefalls between Cape Evans and Turks Head on the south-west shore of Ross Island.
Pyne Glacier 77 04'S Latitude, 162 18'E Longitude. Glacier east of Robson Glacier in Gonville and Caius Range. Flows north and joins Mackay Glacier system south-west of The Flatiron.
Robbins Hill 77 48'S Latitude, 164 04'E Longitude. A hill 5km long which is the eastern-most rock unit on the north side of the terminus of Blue Glacier, on Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The feature rises to 1140m in the west portion.
Robertson Massif 76 22'S Latitude, 161 55'E Longitude. A rugged mainly ice-covered massif, 11km long, located north of Pa Tio Tio Gap. The feature includes Mount Gauss and Mount Chetwynd and forms the north segment of Kirkwood Range.
Rohnke Crests 77 35'S Latitude, 168 41'E Longitude. Two rock ridges (c. 1400m) that are parallel and rise above the general ice mantle on the south-east slopes of Mount Terror, Ross Island. This feature is east of the head of Eastwind Glacier and 6.4km north-east of Conical Hill.
Rowe Nunataks 78 15'S Latitude, 166 07'E Longitude. A cluster of nunataks 5km north-west of Cape Beck in the south-west part of Black Island, Ross Archipelago.
Schmidtman, Mount 76 34'S Latitude, 161 00'E Longitude. A peak to the north of Mount Naab at the north-east end of Eastwind Ridge, Convoy Range.
Schwall Peak 76 51'S Latitude, 160 54'E Longitude. A peak rising to 1200m in southern Convoy Range, adjacent to Staten Island Heights, 5.5km west north-west of Mount Gunn.
Slattery Peak 77 34'S Latitude, 168 59'E Longitude. A somewhat isolated rock peak (c. 600m) that rises above the ice mantle south-east of Mount Terror on Ross Island. The peak position is additionally defined as 8.8km south-west of The Knoll and 6km east north-east of Rohnke Crests.
Snow Petrel Peak 78 32'S Latitude, 164 38'E Longitude. A sharp rock peak (605m) that marks the eastern-most summit of Mason Spur at the south end of Scott coast, Victoria Land.
Speden Bench 78 01'S Latitude, 167 24'E Longitude. A bench (c. 45m) on the west side of White Island, 1.6km from the north end, in Ross Archipelago.
Stevens Cliff 76 50'S Latitude, 162 40'E Longitude. A cliff between Tiger Island and Cape Archer along the north side of Granite Harbor, Victoria Land. The cliff is straight, 5km long and rises 200m above the sea.
Stewart Peak 77 44'S Latitude, 163 52'E Longitude. A sharp coastal peak that rises to 1097m on the south side of New Harbor, McMurdo Sound, Victoria Land. It is the eastern-most summit in the range of hills flanking the south side of Ferrar Glacier.
Streich, Mount 78 09'S Latitude, 158 53'E Longitude. A butress-type mountain (2250m) that rises above Skelton Icefalls midway between Angino Buttress and Portal Mountain.
Stuckless Glacier 78 16'S Latitude, 166 15'E Longitude. A broad glacier in the south-west part of Black Island, Ross Archipelago. It flows south-west between Rowe Nunataks and Cape Beck to Moraine Strait, McMurdo Ice Shelf.
Swyers Point 78 10'S Latitude, 165 08'E Longitude. An ice-free point on the west side of Brown Peninsula, Scott Coast, that marks the north extent of Bellafronto Bight.
Terra Nova Glacier 77 27'S Latitude, 167 42'E Longitude. A glacier about 8km long in north-central Ross Island. It flows north from the saddle between Mount Erebus and Mount Terra Nova into Lewis Bay.
Tito Peak 76 36'S Latitude, 162 17'E Longitude. A prominent peak over 600m, located at the end of the ridge 3km east of Mount Creak in the south-east extremity of Endeavour Massif, Kirkwood Range.
Towle Point 77 27'S Latitude, 169 14'E Longitude. A point 1.6km north of Post Office Hill that marks the north-east extremity of Ross Island.
Tripp Ice Tongue 76 34'S Latitude, 162 45'E Longitude. An ice tongue that occupies the north half of Tripp Bay on the coast of Victoria Land.
Tyree Head 77 39'S Latitude, 167 25'E Longitude. A headland 5km north-east of Sultans Head Rock on the south side of Ross Island. The headland rises to over 400m and is ice covered except for rock exposed on the lower east side.
Uberuaga Island 77 53'S Latitude, 165 17'E Longitude. An island 0.8km long that is the eastern-most feature in Dailey Islands, McMurdo Sound.
Van Allen Range 78 09'S Latitude, 159 30'E Longitude. A range 22.5km long that includes Escalade Peak (2035m), Tate Peak and Mount Marvel, located at the south margin of Skelton Névé between Boomerang Range and Worcester Range.
Varcoe Headland 77 31'S Latitude, 166 12'E Longitude. A low headland (34m) that marks the north entrance point to Horseshoe Bay in west Ross Island.
Vella Flat 78 11'S Latitude, 166 14'E Longitude. A coastal flat to the south of Lake Cole in the north?west part of Black Island, Ross Archipelago.
Vogler Peak 77 38'S Latitude, 162 12'E Longitude. A rock peak (2050m) 1.2km south-west of Mount Irvine on Roa Ridge in Asgard Range, Victoria Land.
Windscoop Bluff 78 32'S Latitude, 164 28'E Longitude. A rock bluff east north-east of Birthday Bluffs on the south side of Mason Spur, Scott Coast, Victoria Land. The bluff rises to c. 1000m and is marked at the base by a large windscoop.
Wyandot Point 77 23'S Latitude, 168 04'E Longitude. A rock point 5km west south-west of Cape Tennyson on the north side of Ross Island.
