Te Wharekura O Kirikiriroa Establishment

Pursuant to sections 146 and 156 of the Education Act 1989, I hereby give the following notice.
N o t i c e
1. This notice may be cited as Te Wharekura o Kirikiriroa establishment.
2. The notice shall come into force on the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
3. I hereby establish in Hamilton a secondary school called Te Wharekura o Kirikiriroa and designate the school as a Designated Character School.
Aims, Purposes and Objectives of Te Wharekura
o Kirikiriroa
4. The Wharekura community will be cognisant of Te Aho Matua to complement the following aims, purposes, and objectives, which constitute the character of the school:
(i) Te Reo Maori will be the principal language of this school (i.e. of instruction, of communication), and at the same time the board will acknowledge the importance of other languages, which will also be taught.
(ii) The school will retain, maintain, and uphold cultural integrity with Tikanga Maori as a guiding philosophy (i.e. those primary cultural concepts and practices pertinent to the inclusion and acknowledgement of Nga Iwi o Tainui - Te Kingitanga, and Nga Iwi katoa o te motu).
(iii) The school will reflect a holistic learning environment (i.e. physically, educationally, socially, culturally, and spiritually) where emphasis will be placed on encouraging students to actively participate in all fields of traditional and modern sciences and technology within all curriculum areas.
(iv) Students will be motivated to participate fully to the best of their abilities, in the learning programmes of this school.
(v) Students will develop a global understanding of cultural, educational, and social development and advancement.
Constitution of the Board of Trustees
5. The Board of Trustees of Te Wharekura o Kirikiriroa shall comprise:
(a) five people appointed by the Minister;
(a) the principal, or principal designate;
(a) not more than four persons co-opted by the board.
