Pursuant to section 129 (6) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and pursuant to a sub-delegation from the Director of
Land Transport Safety by an instrument dated 3 May 1999, I, Peter Graeme Croft, Manager Safer Roads, authorise the erection, installation and maintenance of the traffic signs described in Schedule 1 of this notice, and subject to the terms set out in Schedule 2 of this notice, in substitution for the speed limit signs specified in Regulation 129 of the Traffic Regulations 1976.
Schedule 1
1. Variable School Zone Sign
General Purpose of Sign
A variable school zone sign is used to warn motorists of the presence of a school and when children are travelling to or from school, imposes a 40km/h speed limit by displaying this speed only during those periods.
Description of Sign
A variable school zone sign is a combination of a variable speed limit sign with a "SCHOOL ZONE" sign mounted below. The variable speed limit sign displays during each period the limit applies, a speed of 40km/h, and at all other times is blank.
(a) School Zone Sign
(i) Shape and Size: Rectangular 750mm wide, 550mm high.
(ii) Background Colour: Reflectorised fluorescent yellow-green.
(iii) Border: Black.
(iv) Legend: The words SCHOOL ZONE in black letters, height 125mm, stroke width 19.5mm.
(b) Variable Speed Limit Sign (may be in the form of either Type I or Type II).
Type I variable speed limit sign:
(i) Shape and Size: Square with sides at least 800mm.
(ii) Background Colour: Black.
(iii) Legend:
Roundel: Red, lit by means of light emitting diode, fibre optic or other similar technology, at least 600mm outer diameter.
Speed Value: The number "40" at least 300mm high created by yellow pixels, lit by means of light emitting diode, fibre optic or other similar technology or displayed with fluorescent reflectorised material.
(iv) Yellow lights must be fitted in each corner and operate by flashing diagonally two at a time.
Type II variable speed limit sign:
(i) Shape and Size: Square with sides at least 800mm.
(ii) Background Colour: Reflectorised white.
(iii) Legend: R22 Speed Limit sign with reflectorised red roundel at least 600mm outer diameter and the number 40 in black at least 300mm high.
(vi) Yellow lights must be fitted in each corner and operate by flashing diagonally two at a time.
2. Fixed School Zone Sign
General Purpose of Sign
A fixed school zone sign is used to warn motorists of the presence of a school and imposes a 40km/h speed limit on school days at specified times. The sign may only be erected on side roads contiguous to the road over which a school zone has been defined.
