Traffic Signs-ATMS Auckland

Pursuant to Regulation 129 (6) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and an instrument of sub-delegation by the Director of Land Transport dated 3 May 1999, I, Lyndon Bryan Hammond, Acting Manager Safer Roads, approve the erection, installation and maintenance of signs described in the Schedule to this notice installed as a component of the Advanced Traffic Management System applying on sections of State highway at Auckland, and subject to the conditions detailed in this notice.
Schedule
Variable Lane Control Signs
1. General purpose of signs-The use of a lane may be controlled by means of variable lane control signs that are installed above the lane and that display:
(a) a red diagonal cross, generally in the form shown in Diagram 1, indicating that the lane is not available to traffic travelling in the direction facing the sign; or
(b) a yellow downward facing arrow facing to the bottom left or bottom right corner of the sign, generally in the form
of Diagram 2 or 3 respectively, indicating that drivers must, as soon as practicable, move to the adjacent lane to the left or right; or
(c) a yellow upward facing arrow facing to the top left or top right corner of the sign, generally in the form of Diagram
4 or 5 respectively, indicating drivers must leave the motorway in the direction shown at the first available exit
point; or
(d) a blank display indicating to drivers that the lane is available for use.
2. Description of signs-
(a) Shape and Size: Rectangular at least 450mm high and 700mm wide.
(b) Background Colour: Black.
(c) Border: Black.
(d) Symbols: Must be red or yellow, as appropriate, formed by the illumination of light emitting diodes.
(e) Additional Legend: Circular lights in each corner of the sign, being yellow light emitting diodes, may flash to draw attention to the sign.
3. Operating conditions-The symbols must be displayed in accordance with the Auckland ATMS Operating Procedures Manual approved from time to time by the Chief Executive, Transit New Zealand.
Warning Signs-Variable Advisory Speed Signs
1. General purpose of signs-The variable advisory speed signs, generally in the form shown in Diagram 6, when displayed in accordance with the said Auckland ATMS Operating Procedures Manual, warn drivers of the need to adjust their speed to
no more than that displayed on the sign due to conditions applying on the highway at that time.
2. Description of signs-
(a) Shape and Size: Rectangular at least 450mm high and 700mm wide.
(b) Background Colour: Black.
(c) Legend: The advisory speed value, in kilometres per hour, with numerals at least 350mm high shall be depicted by yellow light emitting diodes.
(d) Additional Legend: Circular lights in each corner of the sign, being yellow light emitting diodes, may flash to draw attention to the sign.
3. Operating conditions-The procedures for determining which advisory speed value will be displayed at any time will
be determined by protocols and strategies defined in the Auckland ATMS Operating Procedures Manual approved from time
to time by the Chief Executive, Transit New Zealand.
