Adoption of Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 1996

N o t i c e
1. Pursuant to Regulation 2 (3) of the Radiation Protection Regulations 1982, I, Annette King, Minister of Health, subject to the modification specified in clause 2 of this notice, hereby adopt for the purposes of the Radiation Protection Regulations 1982, the Regulations for the
Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 1996 (Revised), published by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.
2. Paragraph 570 of the Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 1996 (Revised) is, for the purposes of the Radiation Protection Regulations 1982, hereby modified by adding the words "or alternatively in the front or rear in the case of such a vehicle" to the end of subparagraph (b) of that paragraph.
3. The notice issued under the Radiation Protection Regulations 1982 on 26 August 1996 and published in the New Zealand Gazette on 5 September 1996 at page 2749 is hereby revoked.
4. This notice shall come into effect on 1 July 2001.

Explanatory Note:
This notice adopts the International Atomic Energy Agency Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 1996. The notice also changes the requirements relating
to placarding of vehicles carrying radioactive materials.
The requirements now match the placarding requirements for the transport of other classes of dangerous goods within New Zealand.
