Open Season for Game in Fish and Game Regions
The Minister of Conservation declares an open season for game in the Fish and Game Regions, subject to the schedule of game licenses and fees prescribed in the Third Schedule of this notice and subject to the conditions specified in the First and Second Schedule of this notice, except in the closed game areas published in the supplement to the New Zealand Gazette of 28 March 1985 and later.
New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp
A game bird habitat stamp must be affixed to every licence to hunt or kill game. The following form of the
2000 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp is approved .
The 2000 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp has a face value of ten dollars ($10.00). A fee of two dollars ($2.00) only shall be payable in respect of every game bird habitat stamp supplied in respect of a licence to hunt or kill game.
FIRST SCHEDULE
Except where all game is labelled with the following details:
(a) The name and address of the person by whom the game was taken;
(b) The number of the licence to hunt or kill game held by the person by whom the game was taken;
(c) The name of the Fish and Game Region by which that licence was issued;
(d) The name of the Fish and Game Regions in which the game was taken; and
(e) The date on which the game was taken.
No person shall have in possession on any one day, more than:
Saturday 6 May 2000: The number of game birds specified as the daily bag limit for the Fish and Game Region in which the game is taken.
Sunday 7 May 2000: Twice the number of game birds specified for Saturday 6 May 2000.
Every subsequent day: The number of game birds specified as the daily bag limit for the Fish and Game Region in which the game is taken.
Waiver of Restrictions on Baiting, and Methods of Taking Game Baiting for Waterfowl
Persons may hunt or kill game of the family Anatidae (waterfowl) during the open season for game in all Fish and Game Regions where food has been cast, thrown, placed or planted, either during the current open season for game, the thirty (30) days immediately prior to the season or any other time during the year.
Magazine Shotguns
Persons may hunt or kill game birds, as specified, in all Fish and Game Regions except Auckland Waikato, with any shotgun of a calibre 12 gauge or less having a magazine of any type not adjusted in accordance with regulations made under this Act, and capable of holding more than one shell.
Magazine Shotguns-Auckland Waikato Region-Restricted Capacity
(a) Three shot
From 6 May 2000 and for the duration of the 2000/2001 game season, persons may hunt or kill all game birds within the Auckland Waikato Fish and Game Region with any shotgun of a calibre 12 gauge or less having a magazine of any type adjusted in accordance with regulations made under this Act, and capable of holding no more than two shells.
b) Five shot-Canada goose only
Persons may hunt or kill Canada geese within the Auckland/Waikato Fish and Game region with any shotgun of a calibre 10 gauge or less having a magazine of any type adjusted in accordance with regulations made under this Act, and capable of holding no more than four shells, during the following periods:
6.30 p.m. 15 May 2000 to 6.30 p.m. 21 May 2000
6.30 p.m. 11 June 2000 to 6.30 p.m. 20 June 2000
Camouflaged Rowboats
Persons may hunt or kill game within the following Fish and Game Regions, from unmoored camouflaged rowboats, subject to the conditions specified below.

Pegging Day
1. A person, following purchase of a 2000/2001 Whole Season game bird hunting licence, can reclaim the stand claimed during the 1999 Game Season at any time prior to 10.00am on
9 April 2000 in all Fish & Game regions.
Otherwise unclaimed stands can only be claimed any time after 10.00am on
9 April 2000 in all Fish & Game regions.
Stands are claimed by completing and attaching to the stand or a stake or board at the stand site, the claim tag provided with the licence.
The stand claim tag must be affixed to a board or identifying label having plainly marked thereon the name and address of the claimant and the number of their licence.
The licence holder claiming a stand must be present in person at the stand when marking up such.
NB: In the Auckland Waikato Region, only holders of 2000/2001 Whole Season Adult Game Bird Licences can reclaim hunting stands.
2. No one can claim more than one stand.
3 A stand cannot be claimed closer than 90 metres to a stand already claimed by another person without that person's consent.
4. Any stand not occupied by the claimant within one hour after the opening hour of hunting, on any day, can be occupied by another licence holder.
Conditions
1. These approvals shall not derogate from the principal conditions specified for each Fish and Game Region under the Second Schedule, which shall apply.
2. These approvals will expire at the end of the open season for game specified under the Second Schedule for each Fish and Game Region.

Special Conditions
1. From 6 May to 25 June 2000 inclusive no person shall use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Waikare, any drifting or temporarily moored floating stand or any stand, hide or maimai which is permanently fixed to the lake bed except within 180 metres of the outer margin of the lake, or the shoreline of Motu Nuia Island (Grape Island).
2. No person shall use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Ngaroto any fixed stand, pontoon, hide or maimai except within 85 metres of the margin of the lake.
3. No person shall use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Rotokauri any fixed stand, pontoon, hide or maimai on any open water of the lake.
4. It shall be an offence for any person to wilfully leave on the hunting ground any game bird(s) shot or parts of any game birds shot.
5. It shall be an offence for any person to herd or drive waterfowl for the purpose of hunting or killing them.
6. It shall be an offence to shoot game from any unmoored boat on the Waikato River north of the boat ramp at the confluence of the Mangawara Stream and the Waikato River at Taupiri on any of the first three days or the second weekend of the open season.
7. No person shall possess a firearm in or on any unmoored vessel, except a rowboat, unless the firearm is dismantled or secured in a case, gunslip or other secure compartment, except when in use to retrieve wounded game.

Definition of Areas
The following descriptions refer to Local Authority Boundaries described on the Infomap 242B-2 Department of Survey and Land Information for the Eastern Region Fish and Game Council region.
Area A1: Tauranga District, Western Bay of Plenty District, that part of the South Waikato District within the Eastern Fish and Game region and east of State Highway 1, Rotorua District, Kawerau District, Whakatane District, and Opotiki District.
Area A2: Those parts of the South Waikato District west of State Highway 1 within the Eastern Fish and Game region, Taupo District, and Ruapehu District, which lie within the Eastern Fish and Game region.
Area B1: Gisborne District.
Area B2: That part of Wairoa District within the Eastern Fish and Game region.
Shooting Hours
6.15 a.m. to 6.15 p.m., except that in Areas A1 and A2 from 19 June to 27 August 2000 inclusive and 17 February 2001 to
25 February 2001 inclusive, Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day.
Decoy Limit
No limit.
Maimais
No maimai shall impede the use of navigable channels in the Tauranga Harbour, Ohiwa Harbour, Little Waihi Estuary, Lake Aniwhenua and Lake Taupo.
Maimais erected in the Little Waihi Estuary, Lake Aniwhenua, Ohiwa Harbour, Stump and Waihi bays of Lake Taupo must be dismantled and removed within two weeks of the close of the season (i.e. by 12 September 2000).

Area A: That area within the following boundary commencing at Waiaruhe Road. Then by that road, Owhakura Road, Whangaehu Valley Road and Fields Track to Kakatahi. Then by straight lines to Pipiriki and Tawhata. Then by Tawhata Road to the boundary. Then by the generally eastern boundary of the region to Waiaruhe Road.
Area B: That area within the following boundary commencing at Waiaruhe Road. Then by that road, Owhakura Road, Whangaehu Valley Road and Fields Track to Kakatahi. Then by straight lines to Pipiriki and Makakaho Junction down the eastern bank of the Waitotara River to the sea. Then by the sea coast and generally eastern boundary of the region to Waiaruhe Road.
Area C: The balance of the region contained by the westerly boundaries of Area A and B and the sea coast between the Mokau and Waitotara river mouths.
Area D: Those parts of Areas B and C contained by a line commencing at Opunake and following the Opunake-Eltham Road to Eltham, then by straight line to Rataiti, then by Ongo Road to the eastern boundary of the region. Then southerly by that boundary and the sea coast to Opunake.

Area A: Wairarapa/Bush. East of main Ruahine and Tararua/Rimutaka ranges, apart from Area C.

Area C: South Wairarapa. East of the Rimutaka Range and south of the following boundary: From the summit of the Rimutaka Hill Road east along SH2 to Featherston, east along SH53 to the junction with Kahutara Road, and the Martinborough-Lake Ferry Road to Lake Ferry.
Area D: Manawatu/Wellington. South and west of Tangimoana, Bailey, Wilson and Mingaroa Roads, to Halcombe and along the railway line from Halcombe, east to the Manawatu Gorge and then along the main divide of the Tararua and Rimutaka Ranges.

Definition of Areas
Wairau Lagoons
That area defined as all open waters, islands and the peninsular between Chandlers Lagoon and Big Lagoon, south of the Wairau River mouth, including Te Aropipi Channel and North to the White Bluffs.
Pheasant Area
The area west of the Bryant Range, north of SH63 from St Arnaud to Kawatiri Junction and east of the Hope and Arthur Ranges.
East Coast / Kaikoura Area
The area to the east of the Awatere Valley/Molesworth Road and the Redwood Pass Road.
Quail Area
That part of the Pheasant area north of the Wakefield-Woodstock Road and the Pig Valley Road.
Shooting Hours
6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. during May then 6.45 a.m. to 6.15 p.m. until end of Dabbling Duck season 2000. Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day after 30 July 2000.
Decoy Limit
No limit.
Special Conditions
1. No person shall use or cause to be used for the purposes of hunting or killing game, any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, unmoored camouflage boat or maimai on the Wairau Lagoons, except above the mean high water level.
2. Moored camouflaged boats are permitted for hunting or killing game in the Wairau Lagoons, but shall not be within 200 metres of any other hunting stand.
Farmers who hunt their own property are allowed under section 19 of the Wildlife Act to do so without having to purchase a licence. This probably means you will not receive a current copy of the regional newsletter and national magazine. Contact the Nelson office to place your address on the mailing list.

Duck decoys:
(a) 6 May to 14 May, no person, or persons sharing a stand shall use more than 30 duck decoys. No duck decoys shall be placed within 50 metres of those placed by another hunter.
(b) Rest of duck hunting season: No limit.
Goose, Black Swan and other species: No limit.
Special Conditions
It shall be an offence for any person to wilfully leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies, of any game shot in the North Canterbury Fish and Game Region.
Closed Game Area
The following area is declared Closed Game Area 14:
All that area known as the Rakaia River Lagoon being an area from a line commencing at the confluence of Boat Creek which flows into the lagoon from the northern shore, then north-easterly to the head of the lagoon and including the foreshore in front of the Rakaia Huts Village, thence round the lagoon and south west along the shingle spit to a position opposite Boat Creek, the area being specifically marked by "Closed Game Area" signage.

Area B: That part of the bed of the Waitaki River between Lake Waitaki Dam and the sea.
Area C: That part of the Region not included in Area A and Area B.

6.45 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., except that during the period 6 June 2000 to 15 April 2001 incl Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.

Definition of Areas
Area A: The Clutha River catchment upstream from the Clyde Dam.
Area B: The Clutha River catchment downstream from the Clyde Dam; the Taieri River catchment and all the coastal catchments between Shag Point and The Brothers Point on the east coast of the South Island.
Shooting Hours
7.00 a.m. to 6.45 p.m. area A, 7.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. area B, except that during the period 31 July 2000 to 25 March 2001 inclusive, Canada Goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season.
Decoy Limit
No limit.
Special Conditions
No person shall use or cause to be used on any water within the region for the hunting or killing of game, any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, loo or maimai, except within a distance of 10 metres from: the water margin in non tidal waters, or from the low water mark in tidal waters, or from the outside edge of the raupo growth where raupo abounds, without the prior consent of the Otago Fish and Game Council.
It shall be an offence for any person to leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of Black Swan or other game shot in the Otago Fish and Game Region.
Shooting from a boat is prohibited on the Clutha River on the opening weekend only.
Canada Geese can be hunted during the closed season if an authorisation is obtained from the Otago Fish & Game Council.

THIRD SCHEDULE
Game Licences and Licence Fees
This schedule notifies the definitions and classes of game licenses and fees payable in respect of each class of licence and the conditions attached thereto pursuant to section 72(3A)(a) - (d) of the Wildlife Act 1953.
The $2 Game Bird Habitat Stamp component of the following total licence fees is set pursuant to section 72(3A)(e) of the Wildlife Act 1953
The holder of any game licence for the 2000/2001 game season shall be subject to the conditions and daily possession limits for each Fish and Game Region in which the hunting or killing of game takes place, as specified under the First and Second Schedules of the notice in the New Zealand Gazette in which the Minister of Conservation declared the 2000/2001 open season for game.
The provisions of the Arms Act 1983 apply with respect to firearms used in accordance with the licence.
Definitions
Adult: Any person 20 years of age or older as at 6 May 2000.
Young Adult: Any person 16 years of age or older but not having obtained 20 years of age as at 6 May 2000.
Junior: Any person under the age of 16 years as at 6 May 2000.
Child: Any person under the age of 12 years as at 6 May 2000.
Family: (In respect of Hawke's Bay, North Canterbury, West Coast, Central South Island, Otago and Southland Regions only): Includes a primary adult licence holder, one adult partner and any dependants under the age of 20 as at 6 May 2000.
Class: New Zealand Whole Season Game Licence
Conditions:
A New Zealand Whole Season Game Licence shall enable the holder to hunt or kill game in all Fish and Game Regions of New Zealand.

(2) The holder of the licence shall be subject to the conditions for the Wellington and Nelson Marlborough and North Canterbury Fish and Game Regions, as specified under the Second Schedule of the notice in which the Minister of Conservation declared the 2000/2001 open season for game.

A family licence is the equivalent of an adult whole season game licence for the primary licence holder. It enables him or her to hunt for game birds in all Fish and Game regions from 6 May 2000 until the end of the relevant 2000/2001 game seasons for each region. It enables the other family members named on that licence to hunt for game birds only when accompanied by the primary licence holder and only within the Hawke's Bay, North Canterbury, West Coast, Central South Island, Otago and Southland Fish and Game regions.
