Application to Film and Take Marine Mammals Pursuant to sections 4 and 5 of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978, National Geographic Television and Whalewatch Kaikoura Limited, have jointly applied to the Minister of Conservation for a permit to film sperm whales in the vicinity of Kaikoura, between 1 February 1997 and 30 April 1997, and between 1 February 1998 and 30 April 1998, which will involve the following activities: Approaching in a vessel to within 50 metres of surfaced sperm whales for filming with standard film making equipment and polecameras; Placing divers in the water to within 100 metres of sperm whales for filming using standard underwater cameras; Attaching miniaturised film cameras to sperm whales by suction cups or invasive floy tags for filming and recording data from diving sperm whales. Any persons wishing to make submissions on this application should write to M. F. Donoghue, Species Protection Division, Department of Conservation, Private Bag 68-908, Newton, Auckland, within 28 days after the publication of this notice.
