Australia New Zealand Food Authority Food Standards The Australia New Zealand Food Authority advises progress on the following applications and proposals for the development or variation of standards in the Australian Food Standards Code. The authority has developed a draft policy paper that sets out the policy framework for the role and use of codes of practice to effectively support a less prescriptive food regulatory environment in Australia and New Zealand. You are invited to present written submissions to the authority on matters relevant to this matter, including the potential regulatory impact on consumers, industry and government by 18 April 1997. Matters at Full Assessment The authority has made a preliminary assessment of the following application and proposal and will now make a full assessment of it: Extension of use of alitame (A321). An application received on 1 August 1996 from Cultor Food Science Pty Limited to extend the use of alitame in sugar sweetened chewing gum, electrolyte drinks, electrolyte drink bases and spoon for spoon products. You are invited to present written submissions to the authority on matters relevant to this application, including the potential regulatory impact on consumers, industry and government by 19 March 1997. Matters Before Council The authority has completed inquiries into the variations to standards and new standards (as applicable) prepared at full assessment of the following applications and proposals and has made recommendations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council that the variations be adopted into the Australian Food Standards Code: Schedule of permitted artificial flavouring substances (A237). An application from the Flavour and Fragrance Association of Australia to correct and update the Schedule of permitted artificial flavouring substances. Sucralose in electrolyte drinks and electrolyte drink bases (A309). An application from Johnson & Johnson Pacific Pty Limited to permit the addition of the artificial sweetening substance, sucralose, to electrolyte drinks and electrolyte drink bases. Sucralose in sweetened chewing gum (A310). An application from Johnson & Johnson Pacific Pty Limited to permit the addition of the artificial sweetening substance, sucralose, to sugar sweetened chewing gum. Use of erythrosine in preserved cherries (A324). An application from Ardmona Foods Limited, SPC Limited and Golden Circle Limited to allow for the continued use of erythrosine in preserved cherries. Labelling requirements for fermented comminuted meat products (P146). A proposal to revise the labelling of fermented comminuted meat products.
