Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Ōraeroa Marae, Ngā Kaitiaki o Te Pūaha Rohe Moana and Ngāti Tahinga Rohe Awa) Notice 2024 (Notice No. MPI 2000)
Pursuant to regulation 10 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998, the Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries gives the following notice.
This notice is the Fisheries Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Ōraeroa Marae, Ngā Kaitiaki o Te Pūaha Rohe Moana and Ngāti Tahinga Rohe Awa.
This notice comes into force on 15 April 2026
This notice applies to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana in the New Zealand fisheries waters described as a line commencing on the mean high-water springs at the mouth of the Waikato River, being Okarahia (37°22.35′S, 174°42.33′E); then southerly following the line of mean high-water springs to Ngatutura Point (37°31.22′S, 174°44.66′E); then due west to the Exclusive Economic Zone; then northerly following the Exclusive Economic Zone to a point due west of the point of commencement; then due east to the point of commencement.
This notice also applies to a customary food gathering area/rohe awa in the New Zealand fisheries freshwaters described as a line commencing on the mean high-water mark on the boundary of the Waikato River settlement boundary (at 37°22.45′S and 174°42.15′E); then proceeding along the Waikato River settlement boundary in a generally south-easterly direction to a point approximately 11.7km due east of Ngatutura Point (at 37°31.22′S and 174°52.61′E); then proceeding due west to Ngatutura Point (at 37°31.22′S and 174°44.66′E); then proceeding in a generally northerly direction along the mean high water mark to the point of commencement.
The geographical coordinates named are in terms of the WGS84 datum.
The tāngata whenua of the area/rohe moana/rohe awa are Ōraeroa Marae from the hapū o Ngāti Tahinga.
(1) The Minister for Oceans and Fisheries has cancelled the appointments of Hurricane Jim Thompson, Jeremy Peka Thompson, Richard Te Tiki o Te Rangi Thompson as tāngata kaitiaki/tiaki for the rohe moana and rohe awa.
(2) The cancellation took effect at the end of 23 March 2026.
(1) The Minister for Oceans and Fisheries has appointed May Mau Aroha Thompson, Rodger Kukutai and Gabrielle Tumata as tāngata kaitiaki/tiaki for the rohe moana and rohe awa.
(2) The appointment took effect on 23 March 2026.
