Biosecurity (Declaration of a Controlled Area) Notice Hydatids I hereby revoke the notice entitled ``Biosecurity (Declaration of a Controlled Area) Notice Hydatids'' dated 16 August 1996 and published in the New Zealand Gazette on 22 August 1996, No. 89, page 2338. I hereby declare, pursuant to section 131 of the Biosecurity Act 1993, the whole of New Zealand, excluding the whole of Arapawa Island, to be a controlled area (hereinafter referred to as ``the controlled area'') to enable the limitation of the spread of true hydatids (Echinococcus granulosus), being an unwanted organism under that Act. While this declaration is in force, I hereby give notice of the following matters: (i) All ruminants and pigs to be slaughtered in home killing facilities in the controlled area may only be slaughtered if those facilities are located within a dog-proof enclosure in order to ensure that raw offal is not accessible to dogs. (ii) Dogs within the controlled area shall not be fed the offal of ruminants and pigs unless that offal is first cooked by boiling for a minimum of 30 minutes. (iii) Dogs within the controlled area shall not be allowed access to the raw offal of ruminants and pigs. (iv) All occupiers of land within the controlled area are responsible for preventing ruminants and pigs belonging to them from straying onto neighbouring properties. (v) Dogs entering the controlled area from Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds shall be treated twice for hydatids as follows: a) once within 1 week of entering the controlled area; and b) once at least 5 weeks but not more than 7 weeks after entering the controlled area. Note Home killing facilities do not include any premises licensed under the Meat Act 1981, but includes on-farm facilities used by itinerant slaughtermen. For the purposes of this notice, offal is defined as liver or lungs, and includes any part of the liver or lungs. All dog treatments for hydatids referred to above shall be with praziquantel by the oral route at the dose rate of 5 mg per kg of dog body weight. This notice takes effect from the date of its publication in the New Zealand Gazette. Dated at Wellington this 23rd day of September 1997. BARRY O'NEIL, Chief Technical Officer, Ministry of Agriculture.
