Australia New Zealand Food Authority Food Standards Matters Before Council The Australia New Zealand Food Authority has completed inquiries into the following applications and has recommended that the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council adopt draft variations to the relevant standards of the Food Standards Code. Inquiries Use of artificial sweetening substances in reduced energy cordials, syrups and toppings (A251). This application, received on 12 May 1996 from Cadbury Schweppes, seeks to extend the use of 6 artificial (intense) sweeteners, aspartame, acesulphame K, sucralose, alitame, cyclamate and saccharin, to reduced energy cordials, syrups and toppings. The authority has prepared draft variations to Standard A8 Artificial Sweetening Substances, and Standard O1 Cordials, Syrups and Toppings. The recommendation, if approved by council, will extend the use of the intense sweeteners aspartame, alitame, sucralose and acesulphame K substances to include reduced energy cordials, syrups and topping. To allow the use of Acesulphame K in electrolyte drinks and electrolyte drink bases (A254); to allow the use of Acesulphame K in reduced energy soft drinks and soft drink bases (A255); and to allow the use of Acesulphame K in spoon-for-spoon products (A256). These applications, received on 19 May 1995 from Hoechst Australia Limited, seek to permit the use of acesulphame K in electrolyte drink and electrolyte drink bases, reduced energy soft drinks and soft drink bases and spoon-for-spoon products. The authority has prepared draft variations to Standard A8 Artificial Sweetening Substances. The recommendation, if approved by council, will permit the use of acesulphame K in electrolyte drinks and electrolyte drink bases, reduced energy soft drinks and soft drink bases and spoon-for-spoon products. Full Assessments The authority has completed full assessments of the following applications and has prepared draft variations to the relevant standards of the Food Standards Code. The authority decided, according to section 36 of the Australia New Zealand Food Authority Act 1991, not to conduct inquiries and not to invite public submissions for the purposes of such inquiries. The authority is satisfied that the applications raise issues of minor significance and complexity only and that to omit to invite public submissions prior to making recommendations to council will not adversely affect the interests of any person or body. The authority has recommended that council adopt draft variations to the relevant standards of the Food Standards Code. Colourings on food surfaces (A268). This application, received on 27 June 1995 from Image Setting Services Australia, seeks to allow shellac to be used as a base for permitted colourings so they can be applied to the surface of foods for decorative purposes; and to permit colourings to be applied to the surface of chocolate. The authority has prepared draft variations to Standard A5 Colourings, and Standard Q3 Cocoa and Cocoa Products. The recommendation, if approved by council, will permit shellac to be used as a base for permitted colourings and permit colourings to be applied to the surface of chocolate. To permit microcrystalline cellulose as a Group I modifying agent vegetable gum (A278). This application, received on 19 July 1995 from Food Liaison Pty Limited on behalf of FMC Corporation, seeks to amend the code to recognise a special form of microcrystalline cellulose (powdered and colloidal) as a gum in Standard A10 Modifying Agents (Table I Group I Vegetable Gums). The authority has prepared draft variations to Standard A10 Modifying Agents. The recommendation, if approved by council, will recognise a special form of microcrystalline cellulose as requested by the applicant. If your interests are affected by the authority's decision not to conduct inquiries and not to invite public submissions for the purposes of an inquiry section 63 of the Act provides that, subject to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975, you can apply to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for a review of the authority's decision.
