District Anglers (Taranaki Fish and Game Region) Notice 1994 Pursuant to section 26r (3) of the Conservation Act 1987, the Taranaki Fish and Game Council hereby gives the following District Anglers Notice. N o t i c e 1. Title and commencement (1) This notice may be cited as the District Anglers (Taranaki Fish and Game Region) Notice 1994 and shall come into force on the 1st day of October 1994. 2. Interpretation Words and expressions in this notice which are defined in the Conservation Act 1987, or the Freshwater Fisheries Regulations 1983, shall have the meaning so defined. 3. Open season (1) Sports fish may only be taken from waters during the open season provided for those waters. (2) In all waters except those listed below the open season shall be from the 1st day of October in any year to the 30th day of April in the following year (both days inclusive). (3) In the waters known as: (a) Lake Rotomanu; (b) Lake Mangamahoe, excluding the Waiwhakaiho inlet; (c) Opunake Lake; (d) Ohakune Lake; (e) Lake Rotokuru; (f) Virginia Lake; (g) Lake Namunamu; the open season shall be from the 1st day of October in any year to the 30th day of September in the following year (both days inclusive). (4) In the waters known as: (a) Manganuiateao River and its tributaries; (b) Retaruke River and its tributaries; (c) Tokiahuru River and its tributaries; (d) Mangawhero River and its tributaries upstream from Kakatahi; (e) Raetihi Hydro Dam; the open season shall be from the 1st day of October in any year to the 30th day of June in the following year (both days inclusive). (5) In the waters known as: (a) Lake Rotorangi from the dam face to the Mangamingi ramp; (b) Lake Ratapiko, except the inlet race; (c) Waitara River downstream from the Manganui River confluence; (d) Waiwhakaiho River downstream from the end of Rimu Street extension; (e) Huatoki Stream downstream from Brois Street bridge; (f) Stony (Hangatahua) River, Waiaua River, Mangahume Stream, Kaupokonui Stream, Waingongoro River, all downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridges; (g) Whanganui River (excluding tributaries) downstream from the boundary; (h) All waters south of a line from Patea to the Wanganui-Manganuiateao River confluence, to Kakatahi, and through Colliers Junction to the boundary; the open season shall be from the 1st day of October in any year to the 30th day of April in the following year (both days inclusive), then from the 10th day of June of the following year to the 30th day of September of that same year (both days inclusive). (6) In the waters known as: (a) Lake Wiritoa; (b) Lake Pauri; the open season shall be from the 1st day of October in any year to the 12th day of April in the following year (both days inclusive), then from the 1st day of August of that following year to the 30th day of September of that same year (both days inclusive). 4. Authorised Tackle (1) No licence holder shall fish for, take or attempt to take, any sports fish except by using a rod and running line. (2) Notwithstanding subclause (1) of this clause, when landing a sports fish, a hand-held landing net may be used to secure or land any such fish. (3) No licence holder shall, in fishing for sports fish, have in his control, more than one assembled rod which shall be within 15 metres and under visual observation at all times. (4) No licence holder shall use: (a) More than 2 lures or hooks; (b) Any double or treble pointed hook, or any multiple hook assembly. (c) Any gaff or landing hook; (d) Any hook having a gape greater than 13 mm, measured from the point of the hook to the nearest point of the shank; (e) Any hand-line, stroke-hauling gear, spear gun, paravane, firearm, explosive, spear, net (excluding landing net), trap or any other unsportsmanlike device or gear; (f) Any electric fishing gear, except for the purposes of scientific investigations or data collection; (g) Any poison or medicinal or chemical compound other than a preparation used solely to float or sink a fly or line. 5. Baits and lures (1) No licence holder shall take sports fish unless he or she uses authorised baits and lures. (2) Authorised baits and lures are: (a) Natural and artificial: fly, insect, worm, and crustacea (excluding Koura); (b) Artificial minnow; (c) Fish, but not any portion of fish, ova, or shellfish, providing that shellfish may be used in any artificial minnow. (3) Only artificial fly shall be used at Lake Mangamahoe (including the Waiwhakiho inlet) and Raetihi Hydro Dam. (4) Only artificial fly and artificial minnow shall be used in fisheries experimental waters outlined in clause 7 (1) (b). (5) There shall be no restriction on the bait used by licence holders fishing for perch in any pond or dam on privately owned land. 6. Minimum size to be taken (1) No licence holder shall take, kill, or have in his or her possession any trout or salmon of a length measured from the tip of the nose to the notch of the tail which is: (a) Less than 33 cm, in all waters west of a line from Waverley to Makahu to Onaero, and east of a line from the Whanganui and Ohura River confluence, to the Retaruke River confluence, to the Manganuiateao River confluence, to Kakatahi and through Colliers Junction to the boundary. (b) Less than 20 cm in all other waters. (2) Every licence holder taking a sports fish which does not exceed the specified minimum length shall return it to the water immediately with the least possible injury. 7. Daily limit bag (1) No licence holder shall on any one day have in his or her possession: (a) More than two (2) sports fish taken and killed from waters being Lakes Virginia, Pauri, Wiritoa, Namunamu and Raetihi Hydro Dam and Dobbs Dam; and all waters west of a line from Waverley, to Makahu, to Onaero, but excluding the Waingongoro River downstream of Eltham Road. (b) Any sports fish taken from a fisheries experimental water being: (i) Mangaoraka Stream from the bridge at Te Arei Road West upstream to the bridge at Corbett Road; (ii) Kaiauai Stream upstream of the bridge at Alfred Road; (iii) Stony River from the bridge at State Highway 45 upstream to the bridge at Mangatete Road; In these waters sports fish shall be immediately released back into the water from which they were taken with as little injury as possible. (c) More than four (4) sports fish in all other waters. (2) Where a licence holder has taken or killed the prescribed limit of sports fish in one day he or she shall forthwith cease fishing for the remainder of that day. (3) There shall be no limit on the number of perch taken or killed by a licence holder. 8. Virginia Lake (Wanganui) Despite other rules in this notice, special rules apply to the waters of Virginia Lake. The rules are: (a) Only junior licence holders may take fish; (b) Only two (2) trout per day may be taken. (c) No fly casting; (d) No fishing from the paved area in front (western end) of the lake. 9. Revocation The notice published in the supplement to the Gazette, No. 129 of 29 August 1991, on page 2787 titled District Anglers (Taranaki Fish and Game Region) Notice 1991, and Amendments No. 1 and No. 2 are hereby revoked.
